Hi all,

I am one of those guys that got into Tarantulas specifically due to a species and it's appearance. That species for me was G. pulchripes. After looking through a lot of different sources, I've found that I very much love the appearance of most of the species in that genus that I have seen. I've spent the last few weeks googling, and can find a few species that I don't have currently available on a regular basis in the hobby, but what others may be in captivity and less widely available?

I own:

G. pulchripes
G. pulchra
G. rosea

I have found for sale/plan on acquiring 4-6 of:

G. acteon
G. iheringi
G. portei

There are a number listed on Wikipedia that I've been told are around, but not common. What else is out there and what are the rarer offerings to keep my eyes peeled for if I want to acquire them?

Thanks in advance,

Paul

G. quirogai is probably what has been sold in the hobby as G. pulchra for years. They are so similar that the average hobbyist won't be able to distinguish between them. An arachnologist can for sure, though.

I've also heard of G. sp maule and G. sp North/Northern gold but have no experience with them.

I'm not the "Grammostola Groupie" for nothing. The only ones I don't have, since they are extremely rare in Canada, are Grammostola anthracina, sp.Maule and sp.North (or Northern Gold).
Grammostola sp. Concepcion
Grammostola sp. Formosa
Grammostola pulchripes
Grammostola rosea
Grammostola porteri
Grammostola grossa
Grammostola iheringi
Grammostola actaeon
And last, but never least, Grammostola pulchra

This may sound stupid but what is the difference between G. Pulchra, G. Formosa and G. grossa? :)
I have a pulchra girl but she has some white colorings on the tip of her hairs.

G.pulchra is a flat, velvety, black with a bit of white tips on the abdomen only. G.grossa is a shiny, silvery, black with no white tips. G.sp.Formosa is flat black with all their hairs white tipped all over their bodies - abdomen, carapace, and legs.

As my collection grew and I picked up the occasional Grammie I began to appreciate them more and more. I can state unequivocally if I had known then what I know now about them, my collection would have been VERY Grammie heavy. They are my favorite genus.

I don't know about the other two species you mentioned, but G. anthracina is pretty much non-existent in the US too. I know because I've looked.
In five years, I have seen them available twice - a couple of spiderlings about three years ago and an adult female last year. They were both extremely expensive. The Grammostola sp. Formosa spiderling cost me $150 and air cargo shipping costs. I'm very relieved that she turned out female, since there are no other females around. My sp.Concepcion male is out of luck due to lack of females.

I've heard this from a lot of people. I started looking at getting into spiders 15 years ago and failed very hard. Did ALOT more research, grew up a bit, and decided that I want to take a serious run at my favorite genus. At this point I am on a serious hunt and can see myself spending a lot of money for some of these species.

It would be really nice to have a solid collection of rare Grammostolas sitting in my animal room. This would make me happy. :D

Being involved with a dealer who has been asked to do quotes for U.S. people - I can assure you that shipping alone is atrocious and negates any benefit of shipping one spider.

i kinda assumed that. I know that when we import from europe it can add up to a couple thousand or more in freight charges. Wasn’t sure if being so close would bring it down enough to be feasible. ☹

I've been talking to someone else about this option to, knowing that what I want may be nearly impossible to find. I think at the point you account for the import from Europe, you're needing to spend a few thousand dollars on spiders to make it worthwhile.

This is the reason I've made this post. These spiders are something I want, and if I've got spend a couple grand to get them from Europe, I will.

I did some research here in the US on this subject awhile back but never went ahead with it, but if I remember correctly if you can prove to USFW you're only importing a few T's for personal (non-business) use you can get a much better rate. You might want to check this out.

I looked into this from Martin. He told me my order would need to be 2,000$ min.
