The beauty of Avicularia purpurea

Some few shots of my juvie female, "Iolanthe" ;) Stunning species - I know, people say P. metallica is "the best looking T" - frankly: There are so many other species out there that look just as great. Admittedly, "beauty lies in the eyes of the watcher" as we say over here - personal preference is what it means. However, certain T's just have stunning colors and it's amazing to what colorations mother nature is able.

"Iolanthe", A. purpurea 3.5" female - "Hello? What's going on?"
P1020951.JPG

"Iolanthe", A. purpurea 3.5" female - "Alright, fine. I'm gonna pose for a couple shot...but no more!"
P1020961.JPG

"Iolanthe", A. purpurea 3.5" female - "Last one, human!" (she vanished into her webtube after this :D)
P1020963.JPG

And for those that asked for a ventral shot of my Poecie, here you go. Best I could do. I'm still thinking male...anyone disagree? (Next molt will hopefully be viable and I can confirm its sex)

"Artemis", P. subfusca - ventral shot #1

NOTE: Check the updated pictures on the page before this, too! ;) Contains A. minatrix update and some more

That purpurea sure is a looker! ;) wish mine would grow, it's been a year and its still under an inch :(

As far as the subfusca mine looked just like that on the vent side and forever thought male for sure and as you know I was recently proved wrong lol I'd wait the next molt should tell for sure.... That's if you can get it out in time :p

They don't grow too, fast - but still not -that- slow? Mine went from 3rd instar to 9th instar within 0.5-0.75 year and I don't powerfeed or keep them at elevated temps. Weird...

I'll just wait until the next molt with the subfusca ;)

So far, a good bunch of my T's seem to consider it "winter" and went into hiding. I haven't really seen the following for a good while now:

B. smithi (hardly out, if ever - tens to go hide since mid Dec 2012)
B. auratum (hardly out, if ever - tens to go hide since mid Dec 2012)
G. pulchripes (went into hiding Nov 2012 - hasn't yet reappeared - she's fine though! Probably premolt, too)
P. cambridgei (haven't seen the big girl after rehousing at all. Has webbed herself in, only comes out to drink occasionally. This one is in premolt, I'm sure)
P. irmina (my big girl, "Phaedra" -same as with the P. cambridgei - the other P. irminia "Firali" is very defensive lately and appears to be in premolt)
P. langenbucheri (still only 1.5" but with a HUGE attitude! that little one seems to think its an Abrams tank or something :D - hasn't come out in over a month - except for drinking)
A. azuraklaasi (premolt - she's quite defensive lately, tried to strike at me when I went to refill her waterdish - evaded her - she went back into hiding :D)
A. diversipes (aside from having molted within the last month, these have been increasingly secretive since start of Dec 2012 staying in their webtubes in contrast to sitting out usually)
C. fimbriatus (both are in premolt)

The only ones that seriously doesn't seem to care what season it is, are the Euathlus sp. "red" spiderlings, the Euathlus pulcherrimaklaasi, the Homoeomma sp. "blue" and my A. geniculata - those are out and about all the time. Although it seems that at least the geni is more defensive over the last month - she doesn't attack the waterstream anymore while refilling her waterdish - nooo...she tries to go for the hand holding the sprayer! LOL - she -jumped- at me a week ago which ended up in her running over the floor, into my shoes standing at the side and behaving defensive like hell when I tried to get her out! This T certainly keeps me on my toes, lol. I like her :D Whole ordeal was solved within 10 min, but nevertheless just another interesting experience in my time keeping T's :D:D:D

Some few pics I snapped during waterdish-refill-time ;)

"Adena", B. smithi, 4.5" female - taking a drink (took this one a couple nights ago)
P1030014.JPG

"Adena", B. smithi, 4.5" female - being happy munching on a tiny roach
P1030015.JPG

"Kamala", B. auratum, ~5" female - annoyed about having her picture taken (she gave me a threatposture actually, but I was to slow and got this pic before she hurried into hiding)
P1030017.JPG

Will try to get the P. pulcher out on the upcoming weekend for a photoshoot. That (still suspect) boy didn't show -any- defensiveness today when I had to prod him some to get a dead cricket out of his enclosure. Just went totally stiff. Even my versis have more spunk than that one, lol :D

Psalmopoeus pulcher pictures

As promised, some pics of my P. pulcher (who didn't want to be messed with at first!) who seems to be in premolt, as he (still suspecting a male here) doesn't have a good grip currently. Pretty mellow for the most part, but reacts quite defensive at first and then again after a while being messed with. Due to premolt, I didn't want to totally stress out the T, so I only took a few pictures and let him run back in (yes, he actually sprinted back into his enclosure by himself! *pats* good boy! :D). Certainly despises bright light, too.

"Flavia" (probably Flavio actually) - 3.75" suspect male, Psalmopoeus pulcher - "Why you mess with me human? Get lost!"
P1030021.JPG

"Flavia" (probably Flavio actually) - 3.75" suspect male, Psalmopoeus pulcher - "I'm gonna run this way..."
P1030022.JPG

"Flavia" (probably Flavio actually) - 3.75" suspect male, Psalmopoeus pulcher - "Or maybe better this way...?"
P1030023.JPG

"Flavia" (probably Flavio actually) - 3.75" suspect male, Psalmopoeus pulcher - "Fine - ONE profile picture! Tadaaa - you done?"

"Flavia" (probably Flavio actually) - 3.75" suspect male, Psalmopoeus pulcher - "Geez, talk to the abdomen!"

Ya I had three and all seemed really weak when I got them and one was just tiny and scrawny! Well after two weeks two of them just up and died which was wierd and I was left with the little guy... So it been getting a lot of special attention :)

And +1 your pics have really improved man! Keep up the good work!

Thanks and yeah, seem to be medium-fast growers.

My E. murinus was out just a few minutes ago, so I got my cam and quickly snatched a few pics before she (suspect girl) vanished again. Also took the liberty of testing her temperament after her last molt to see if it would've changed. Prodded her twice very lightly and she's still an oddball: No threatening, no speedy reaction really, no biting, no hair kicking - just calm. And going stiff if it's too much for her liking ;)

So now for the pics:

A. geroldi molt (now 3rd instar)

Amazing! I love the colors on the P. irminia! Amazing avics as well. c:
Love irminias! Can be quite defensive (as I experience with my 2nd female), but oh so gorgeous tarantulas! Thank you, Zevian and glad you like the pictures.

Wow, the collection has come a long way!...lookin good, my friend!
Thanks, Levi! Yep, there were quite some more added and they're all doing well (no whatsoever problems with any of the Avics for example)! Thanks for checking on my pics ;)

The first of three A. geroldi actually molted yesterday and I took some pictures after I removed the molt ;)

Avicularia geroldi, 0.75" sling, unsexed - freshly molted - this picture shows what happens if I use an ISO of more than 80 when taking pictures from these - so glad Michael and Chad gave me the tips how to improve pictures!

Some new pics...various species

Thought I'd upload these here, too. Currently putting together another "Picture Collection Vid" for YT, and did get some nice updated pictures.

"Firali", P. irminia female, 4.5" - since she's in premolt she's quite cranky, got a threatpose with fangs out from her when I tried to get her out...
P1030048.JPG

"Firali", P. irminia female, 4.5" - although I raised this one from a tiny 1" sling, she's certainly way meaner than my other female - this pic was taken AFTER she calmed down a little after whirling around and threatposing...little brat.
P1030054.JPG

"Medeia", A. geniculata female, 5" - her name means "daring" btw which is very fitting. As long as you don't get too close, she's not too bad to deal with at all...
P1030052.JPG

"Medeia", A. geniculata female, 5" - ...but any intrusion into her "habitat" (whole cage is considered that!) is deal with swiftly and usually by biting first, asking questions later :D
P1030053.JPG

Euathlus sp. "red" / "fire" / "flame", unsexed, 1" sling - all the same spider with those names and hasn't molted for over 6 months now. They grow extremely slow, but are very cute. Actually, this little one tried nomming on me once, though his fangs didn't succeed penetrating my skin it was quite funny seeing him do that (suspecting a male on that one)

A new series of Homoeomma sp. "blue" pictures

Since I tried out some different settings on my cam, I could get some very nice pictures with higher ISO to show off the colors of this beautiful T. There was no tempering with the contrast involved, just another ISO setting, shutter setting, flash setting...enjoy!

"Jewel", Homoeomma sp. "blue", confirmed female, ~3.75" - 4.25" (didn't measure here really, yet)

I just love that Homoeomma...I've been wanting one but I hear they are super super slow growing. Also, they should come in green. ;)

Really nice collection, especially your psalmo collection :)

And it's funny how same specie can look so differently, for example your P. cambridgei is alot darker than mine. And that E. murinus have really nice colors!

They don't grow fast, that's for sure. However, time between molts is quite long, but once they -do- molt, they gain considerably size-wise! Try them!

Thanks, Michael! ;) That's nuts with your GBB. Both of mine showed the blue-green carapace from 3" up, then again, both are males :D

Thank you, Marijan2! I do like Psalmos and Avics most so far ;) Coloring differences are to be expected in living creatures, that's my view ;)

Did a little vid about "raising Avic slings" - since soooo many people are afraid about it. Hope it helps some people...
