To me mild means some attitude without thrashing the enclosure about.

Davus pentaloris.

They stick their abdomens up when defensive. Have amazing colors all their life. Small, feisty, webbers, not expensive, good feeders. Barely kick compared to my brachypelmas. Have been visible a lot. My enclosures are set up with this consideration.

if you dont have a davus in your collection, you need one. There are some more rare species available with high price tags. I wish i could afford them!

they have the pumpkin colors 🥰

i have two, after a molt its even more vibrant. They hunt like jaguars.

this one will be due to molt soon. Just so you can see its still gorgeous even when faded. The black will be panther black after a molt and for a while. The burnt orange is always that color.

I have a sling and I agree with everything you said. Possibly my favorite looking sling tbh. The colors are so vivid. They are so cheap too

My most gentle spider would be the Grammostola pulchripes female.
Closely followed by Cyriocosmus ritae.

All the Brachypelma/Tliltocatl species I keep are either skittish, hair kickers, or both.

My Cyriocosmus elegans are probably my most chill tarantulas. They can move pretty fast but don't do it often. They are also very tiny and very cute and their adult coloration shows up pretty much immediately.

All the Cyriocosmus species seem to be pretty chill in general tbh.

There are none better. If you don’t have one, why not? Join us….

Was really considering one but haven’t since I do have a “simillar” looking species, chromatus. Plus they are kinda expensive at a decent size.

Think I’ll go with the vagans. Did have a $100 budget tho so I might get myself a sling/juve geniculata too…

You’ll be happy you did. My guy is often amusing me with his antics, is a hunt, seek and kill tank at feeding time, has only ever flicked hairs at me during a rehouse and is just beautiful. They have a following for good reason. :)

I'm not a terrestrial guy at all, but you get a lot of personality bang for the buck with geniculatas. Mine is out almost always. If I don't see it for over a day, it's usually because he's molting.

I always hear that people had theirs run around in circles when startled even a bit, mine won’t even budge when poked (she likes being on the front of the glass, not ideal for maintenance).

I don’t think I’m qualified to say that they are calm though since I only have one. While my room is fairly cold, my P.met’s enclosure is beside a reptile enclosure so it gets decently warm from the radiating heat lamp.
I have 2 P rufilata, one is very calm and, when disturbed, will take his time wandering back into his happy hole while the other instantly hides. Both are capable of insane speed though, definitely not a beginner species. I'd go for a Brachypelma, Tliltocatl, Grammostola, or Aphonopelma sp.

Oh man, I might just get sucked into the geniculata following. A friend has a large 6 inch female for sale and she would go perfect in the large enclosure I have.

Can’t buy her this week though (promised myself a budget). If she is still available next week tho I’ll just say it’s meant to be… will be updating!

I've got one, & that's my experience with my rufilata, as well. Although, it's also the one that gave me the best speed demo; my asshole friend brought his asshole dog over, & like the asshole he is, started playing guy with his shirt sleeve, & knocked over an antique lamp, causing this huge crash, & instantly illuminating the spider rack..NONE of them liked it, but that rufilata, man .. wholly moly...gave me GOOD reason not to get complacent; it darted around his enclosure & disappeared in a split second, no joke. Never saw any of them do THAT before...REAL glad that lamp fell short of hitting them, I don't know what I'd have done.

I must say it's my young adult female P. miranda, always out just chilling on her bark doesn't even flinch when I change her water beneath her. I assume she is also getting close to premolt since not interested in feeding in two months now.

Looking and asking, i’ve found a 7 inch B.smithii for $50, 6 inch Vagans for $30, 5 inch emilia for $50, and a 5 inch klaasi for $80. Still torn right now on which to pick.
If female then those prices are amazing esp for the klaasi they aren't a spider you see too often. A big smithi & emilia too!
Think I’ll go with the vagans.
Vagans would be a fantastic choice.

I have a female Rufilata and she's probably my easiest to rehouse. She's kind of a gentle giant in that regard, but I treat her with loads of respect at all tines

That would be infuriatingly stressful. Glad to hear the collection is alright. I had a close call with my 1.5" Chilobrachys natanicharum yesterday. When I opened the lid, little bud couldn't find his hole and zorped right onto the side of the enclosure before I could even react. I very calmly got a catch cup over it so it could only really turn back, and it zorped back and into its hole no issues, I was sweating beads the whole time. Again, OWTs don't mess around.

Well I'm glad THAT had a peaceful resolution, LoL. I'm hijacking "zorped" though... perfect descriptor, LoLoL

Neat difficilis you got there. Person whos selling the geniculata is selling an 8 inch LP for $80, and since the 6 inch geniculata is similar looking to my chromatus, plus its $170, im thinking of maybe going for the LP so I won’t have to eat instant ramen for the rest of the month.

I do love my big spiders. still waiting for my Phormictopus and Xenesthis to pack on some size….

A month of ramen is nothing compared to years of joy with a genic!

I looked for chill, beginner-friendly species when I got my first two a year ago and went with a Brachypelma hamorii and a Grammastola pulchra. Both certainly lived up to their beginner-friendly reputations, and I’ve no regrets, but they are both juveniles, and both have changed quite a bit over the year after molting. The hamorii was a really bolty, skittish hair kicker at first but is now mostly calm and hasn’t kicked hairs once since her last molt, and the pulchra used to be nearly un-phaseable and now scurries around a bit whenever I open the enclosure to feed him. So, also entirely expected after reading about them, personalities and chill-ness are unique to the individual and can change!

You asked above about Brachypelmas, and if I were to get another, I’d probably go for an emilia. They’re beautiful and seem much-loved by those who have them.

Update: went to a reptile meetup and saw some T sellers, they didn't have the tarantulas in person though and had to order them. Currently waiting for them to process and ship them, should arrive in about a week.
What I decided to get:
- 2 inch female genic (heard they are fast growers, wanted to watch her grow)
- 7 inch female Lasiodora parahybana (good price for the size)
- 5 inch female P murinus (been on my to get list for awhile)
heard they are gonna give a bonus, looking forward to hear what I got.

Good and bad news all the tarantulas arrived a few days ago, 2 different packages. For the freebie and LP it was 2 days in the mail and the package was pretty hot. Got a freebie Hottentotta hottentotta. Everyone survived the trip but the LP died the next day not sure why, she did seem very sluggish when I unboxed her but she did walk around the enclosure (wobbly) before passing under the hide.

I spent so much on the enclosure and none of my Ts are big enough for it so thats a bummer, can’t get a refund either because she arrived alive.
