man i am torn
on the one hand why tf would you pin it, on the other absolutely amazed about what happened

i guess even the best of us make supid mistakes sometimes

take good care of your little Jesus
Well, it was completely unresponsive for at least 5 hours before I stuck a pin in it, and I mean limp and lifeless. Given the condition it was in when I got it out of the vial, I think I did good even waiting that long to call it. Some vendors have pretty strict timelines for reporting DOA and require photographic proof that the specimen is dead, thus the pin. I'm just glad I left it out on my workbench for the rest of the day instead of putting it in the garbage right away, otherwise I never would have found it!

Very interesting story but I'd definitely stop buying from a seller who ships drowned spiders.
It was a well known vendor and they were helpful getting the issue resolved. Mistakes happen, so it's nice when someone takes responsibility for them and makes things right.

i understand, i just never heard of using a pin as "proof", not something i'd do, but hey maybe its common

anyway glad everything was resolved well and thanks for sharing your experience

0.0.1 Cyriocosmus ritae (Yoshimitsu) molted this morning. It might be up to 0.75" DLS now!

There is one of these for sale at my LPS that's about 4", that I was gawking at while this one was at home molting. I'm so glad I'm poor; I had a hard time walking away from her.

But then I got to come home to this babe

This teeny-tiny Theraphosinae sp. Cuzco molted today. The molt was right at 1/2" DLS: View attachment 461793 View attachment 461794

Here's a pic of a freshly-molted Cyriocosmus ritae booty:

And 2 recently molted specimens turned out to be female:

This is hands down the craziest tale I've come across on this website. This little star needs a diary akin to Lava, but she needs a name...referring to her as "the grammostola sp concepcion who survive getting a pin through her carapace" isn't exactly rolling off my tongue ...

My Nhandu chromatus molted on Monday but it went very poorly. I was able to get a good bit of the molt pulled off that she was stuck in, but even after that it's not looking good. Might be a wet molt, I'm not sure. Obviously I'm keeping an eye on her and I gave her an extra water dish so she won't have to travel far to get water but it's not a great situation.

Another molt this morning, this one deserves a separate post...

A couple months ago I ordered a trio of Grammostola sp. concepcion slings. Two out of the three were DOA. You can see in this pic that this sling was essentially drowned in the shipping vial because too much water was added during packing. I left it to dry out for several hours, but it was still unresponsive, so I stuck a pin in it and sent a pic to the vendor. The replacement was also DOA (which is the second one), but that's another story.

I went back to clean up about 6 hours later and noticed the pin was moving around under a paper towel - the sling had come back to life and was moving around with the pin sticking out of it! I very carefully pulled the pin out and put the sling in the condiment cup I'd prepared for it, not expecting much. Here you can see the pin hole right in the center of it's carapace:

I have been feeding and watering it about once a week, but it never took any food and I never actually saw it drink. I was pretty confident that I would eventually find it dead, but this morning I found it had molted and looks great! View attachment 461581

You can still see the pin hole in the carapace of the exuvia:

Yet another example of how resilient these slings really are. I hope it eats soon, will know in a few days...
So this is what you meant when you said Zombie sling...

I'm scared. You need to quarantine that T to a triple thick bulletproof plexiglass enclosure before it bites you and you become zombie spiderman.

Yes, this is what I meant. I don't know, though, it might not be too bad...

The entire molt's abdomen was still attached, which I know isn't the end of the world but she really is not looking right. Her legs aren't malformed but there's something really off about them. This spider was acting very weak and lethargic in the weeks leading up to this molt and I thought she was just dehydrated, so I was coaxing her to her water dish almost daily and making sure she got to it to drink. But it seems like she just didn't have the energy to get through the molt. The new abdomen is a little lumpy looking and there's still a chunk of the old abdomen stuck to her that I'm not able to get to.

Yeah until you get an addiction for those famous Golden Tiger Paw dubia snacks Ultumz is always on about... coupled with a craving for human brains I wouldn't even know how to manage!

Though it's fascinating to think you could nail a T through the "forehead" center mass and it could survive. Makes a zombie T even that much scarier.

Ganglia, how even

My Phormingochilus sp. "Ackaya"-yes the same one that molted recently-has now molted into a juvenile. I just rehoused it today.

My Ceratogyrus brachycephalus freebie sling molted yesterday as well, and I just uncovered molts from one of my Taksinus bambus slings and one of my Chilobrachys andersoni slings. One of my Scolopendra spinossima pedelings molted today as well (my pedes, save the new true S. gigantea, molt frequently but leave no evidence due to eating their molts)
