Really?! I thought lobster roaches gave live birth (wait - is this considered "live birth?")! Ugh - these things DO breed like rabbits, don't they?

Any chance of the babies, uh, "hatching" while in the tank now?
roaches do a strange "live birth", those that "birth"

they evert the ootheca from their reproductive organs proper into a special storage cavity where the eggs mature. babies eventually crawl out of the mom

it's pretty crazy, actually... reminds me of marsupials a tiny bit

roaches rule!

I'd rather deal with roaches than crickets, personally! Crickets bite, they make noise, and they are just all-around nasty critters.

Are you sure that is a B. vagans, Becca? Mine has a black carapace with just a little "trim" of buff around the edges, and she was wild-caught in Florida, so I'm pretty sure that's what she is. Of course, I don't know how large your T is, either, so maybe it's just immature and hasn't got its adult coloring in yet, but this one looks a bit like an Aphopelma hentzi that's recently moulted.

I thought the same thing before I started using them - now that I see how much easier (and less smelly) they are than crickets, I'm quite happy sticking with them. They aren't nearly as "icky" as I thought they would be. :)

I have the same thoughts, which is why I put (purchased as) in front of the name.

I know it's not A. hentzi - I've had some questions whether or not this spider was, in fact, B. vagans due to the carapace coloration and long hairs on the legs. The best guess that I've gotten so far is that it is likely some type of hybrid.

The carapace coloration has actually lightened a bit over the past few molts and I keep hoping each time it molts that it will suddenly be dark and normal. :) It's about 4" now and no such luck. The growth rate has been amazing - from 0.5" to 4" in about 10 months!

Just think of all those baby roaches you could have had.......
As quickly as these things breed, I think I'll be okay. :) I had about 50ish lobsters, stuck them in a rubbermaid container in the corner for a few months - opened it back up and I had several hundred.

That's an emergency abortion of oothecae. Occasionally if they're close to "hatching" and mom get caught, the aborted ootheca may yield some babies. Last resort I guess. In your case, the ooth looks too fresh to be viable...

Dangerous to the spider

I just posted about this on another thread. I think what you are doing could be dangerous for your spider. Just a thought.

Responsibility

One has a certain amount of responsibility once you contain a wild animal that now depends on you for it's very survival. The comments here that "its your T and you can do with it what you want.." is really not very smart. What makes anyone think they can be God over another living thing no matter what that is. Do you fight your family dog with a pitbull?..probably not. That would be irresponsible.
You have to do your best to ensure the survivability of whatever is entrusted to you on any level.

You might chose to write to Rick West [birdspiders.com,] tell Rick that you fed a mouse to your T. In fact, send him those pictures. I am sure that Rick would not agree with that. He is considered a world wide expert on mygalomorphs and my guess is after speaking with him frequently that he would not approve. But, if you are on Rick's level of expertise then perhaps i should listen to someone else on such matters. Please becareful when caring for your Ts...
