If its t info yous are both looking for our search bar function will bring all the info you could want for the species your researching 😊 it's my favourite function 😁 Good luck to you both n welcome to the family 😊

Thanks for the welcome.
That OBT wasn't that bad.
The pet store had it in a critter keeper that wasn't much larger than the spider. It had webbed and stayed near the top, so the pet store employees wouldn't even feed her. The only issue I had was when I tried to get her out and into a, I believe, 50-gallon aquarium. I ended up just opening the critter keeper and placing it inside the Aquarium, and she came out on her own.
I had experience with fast and defensive spiders before. I had raised a couple of brownish-gray fishing spiders.

Hi.
I'm Stu. I am in my mid 40's, live in South Wales UK and finally getting into owning tarantulas. I have started with a Tliltocatl Vagans (Mexican Red Rump).
I have had it since Feb this year, bought as a 1cm sling. I have to admit I have made a few mistakes, but so far have managed to rectify them before causing any damage. I did do a bit of research before I got it, and months and months of thinking about it, and what sort I should start with. Anyway, that one is doing well and now I am in the process of getting another one. I am currently waiting for delivery of my Neoholothele incei (Trinidad Olive). I think I am hooked, the only problem I have now is the space for them, and the wife :D

Hi everyone,

My name is Juudi and live in Finland. I have kept arachnids about three years but I have had a long break from this hobby. I got back like a month ago when I bought juvenile P. nigricolor, B. hamorii and M. balfouri from a local reptile expo. Especially I'm interested of fossorial tarantulas. I might also want to do/try breeding in the future. :)

I study at a university of applied sciences and work part-time alongside my studies. Besides keeping tarantulas I enjoy spending time in nature, geocaching, reading and playing video games.

....space for them, and the wife :D
Just make sure she has access to fresh water, & she'll be fine...LoL, welcome to the boards, Stu.

Hi everyone, and greetings from Germany!

It has roughly been a year since I joined, so I figured it was about time to introduce myself.

My name is Tizian, and I have been a long time reader, but I rarely wrote on Arachnoboards so far.

Ever since I was little, I have had a fascination with bugs in general, and spiders in particular. When I was a kid, I remember going on hikes through our city with my father to look for the biggest (or most beautifully colored) cross orbweavers (Araneus diadematus) we could find. I also liked to feed the large house spiders (Eratigena atrica) which were common in cellars and the outside of buildings with insects that I would catch. Back then, those large Eratigena atrica specimen seemed amazingly impressive to me. I also had a book about tarantulas and their husbandry and read about the different species which were available in the hobby already back then. But having a somewhat arachnophobic mother, there was no chance for me to keep tarantulas while growing up. That being said, after moving out of my parent's home to go to university, it was always clear to me that I would eventually get pet arachnids. And after moving in together with my fiancΓ©, who is a fellow invertebrate enthusiast, we finally started our journey into the hobby I had thought about joining for so many years, and have been keeping tarantulas (and amblypygids) since almost 5 years now.

Jason here, Senior Lecturer in Biology in the southeast US. I've been fascinated by and in love with arachnids since childhood, and have kept (and currently keep) several species native to the various regions which I've lived. My former boss is actually quite well known in the field of spider behavioral ecology, and I learned a lot more from her during my first master's degree, as well as during my employment working for a statewide K-12 math and science educational outreach program under her supervision. I'm currently entertaining developing a four-week special topics summer course in arachnology, which would essentially be a broad survey of arachnid biodiversity, with the course format primarily being lab and field-based in nature. I greatly look forward to chatting with other folks here, and learning even more from expert keepers around the world, and would likely use what I learn here (with proper credit given, of course!) during the development of the aforementioned course, which I hope to initially offer in Summer 2026.

Hi and welcome to ab πŸ™‚
What an interesting background, always pleased to have another boffin in the family πŸ˜‰ your course sounds extremely interesting, I am not a boffin in any means but I am an enthusiast tell me would this course be an in person course or would you make it on line hoping to collect data of biodiversity in different countries or would it be just to collect data on your local area? Just curious 😊 please remember I am not smart so use layman's terms please πŸ˜‰

It would be an in-person course for students at my local university. One part of the course (as an option for a project that is part of their grade) would be for students to collect local native arachnid specimens, identify them, and properly preserve them. Their specimens would establish a new arachnology collection to add to our already fairly decent (for our institution's size) animal collection. Other options (aside from a collection) would allow students to design and conduct an experiment with live arachnids, do a literature review on an arachnological topic of interest to them, or even adopt one or more arachnid pets, and basically present an experiential care journal (requiring references to online sources, which could inclue AB). However, I would love to include, and would welcome physical specimens from around the world if any fellow AB members wanted to contribute to the collection! Also, I had to look up the word "boffin," as I had never even heard it, but now it's one of my new favorite words, so thank you for that! :geek:

That sounds very cool 😎 if you would be happy with ppl sending sp in though you should maybe shout out on a thread on ab I know there are alot of budding biologist ect on here you may get some that would send in for you 😊

Idk what boffin would come bk as on Google but where I come from the North East of England it's used as a term of endearment for someone who is educated with diplomas to back them up πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ its just a word that has always been in my vocabulary πŸ˜† and more then once have had to explain on ab 🀣. I am glad you like it though, I always thought it was a good sounding word, fun to say 😊

Hey all, grateful to be here and as my username implies, I am a formerly heinous arachnophobe turned spider-obsessed fan of all things with eight legs, haha. This all has happened so quickly. Five weeks ago, I'd scream and try to kill any spider I saw without hesitation. Four weeks ago, I fell down a YouTube rabbit hole on tarantulas and started questioning everything. Three weeks ago I picked up my first ever T, a Chaco Golden Knee. Instantly hooked! Two weeks ago I brought home an Arizona Blonde that tried biting me through her plastic cup three times. I didn't know the wild-caught ones can be a little spicier. One week ago, I brought home a Brazilian Black, young female that is absolutely stunning. And tomorrow, overnight Fedex is bringing me an Egyptian pink velvet spider and... and this is the one I am SO excited for... a paraphrynus carolynae, a tailless whip scorpion! I will have a TON of questions on all of my species eventually, but I have so many questions for paraphrynus owners on here and I'd love to hear some ownership experiences. Again, still can't believe I'm here. I'm learning so much about arachnids, I'm fascinated and obsessed. Attaching pics of my current collection and the velvet / tailless I'll hopefully be getting tomorrow. Thanks for welcoming me in!

Howdy from Oregon!

I've always found animals of all kinds fascinating, but spiders are a very new passion. I really like learning about any species but I love jumping spiders in particular.

Early this year I went out on a limb and decided to adopt a big audax that showed up in my mom's house. It ended up being a gravid female, and my partner convinced me to try to keep & raise the slings instead of just releasing them.

My original jumper passed after laying her second egg sac (RIP Katamari πŸ’”) but I'm still caring for a little over 100 of her offspring between I3-I5, and now have both a male (I8) and a female (I9) Regal that were gifted to me.

I'm having a blast watching, caring for & learning everything I can about them!

Just found this community and though I know I need to lurk & read more, I figured I'd at least say "hi."

Hi! πŸ™‚
Well welcome to the boards, Katamari! Love the name, LoL. Great homage to your original girl, there; I'm sure sure appreciates your care of her young ones in her steed.

Hi to all from Oregon.

I've always loved creatures in my home, starting from childhood. I've had many aquariums over the years with all kinds of interesting freshwater species. My current tanks are one with an Axolotl, another with Dwarf Puffers, Peacock Gudgeons, and shrimp, and a small one for snails (for the puffers) and a Betta. I also have a 12 year old Bearded Dragon, and 2 dogs. For all of my enclosed critters, I've always enjoyed setting up their environments more naturally. All of my aquariums have live plants and I LOVE setting up and watching the little mini-worlds.

I've become interested in adding spiders and their little mini-worlds to my home. I'm looking at Jumping Spiders and Tarantulas, although Black Widows are also an interest of mine because they're native here and I think they're gorgeous. (We've found them in our home, and though I don't want them there free, I would love one to stare at that I know would be safe from us and the dogs and vice versa.) I've never gotten an animal without deep diving into research, so that's the phase that I'm at now - collecting info, making lists of species, care requirements, etc. and thinking about the enclosure environments. I'm interested in bioactive if it's doable for the desired species as well.

I've always found forums extremely valuable when it comes to any critter's care, so here I am. I look forward to learning from you all.
