Well, no hooks or gloves so at least it's not a MM :D meaning (s)he'll stick around for a while :)

I've read Sexing for dummies but haven't found anything conclusive.
That's true. I just uploaded a "how to" vid on that subject btw if you want to check it out. Had some people request that on YT.

Your video is titled "How to sex a tarantula". i was merely making a joke based on the thought that some people on Youtube might understand the title in a wrong way.

Take a picture of your B.Smithi after she molts which looks like it will be soon. Her colors will be vibrant then. Thanks for sharing! :photogenic:
There ya go. Caught her in the open after "taking out the trash".

Shed the brownish gray coat to replace it with stunning black. The orange hairs on the rump are a nice touch, too.

As you can see, the emilia-esque dark V on the carapace has spread and blackened as well :)

The aforementioned 'trash'

I need to re-read Storm's video guide on exuvium sexing, more precisely the part on mending mangled moults :D wanna confirm the gender stated by breeder

Bonus - still don't have name for this beauty

looks like a G. pulchripes :)

---------- Post added 12-07-2012 at 07:11 PM ----------

If i had to take a guess of its gender id assume male from the ventral.

---------- Post added 12-07-2012 at 07:17 PM ----------

as far as the Brachy goes, it DOES appear female ventrally earlier in the thread. The pic above of its exuvium isnt showing anything that can be used for sexing..the abdomen needed to be opened up more

Hope you can confirm the sex the breeder told you it would be. All of mine turned out the sex breeders told me, then again I only purchase from that I know I can trust 100%. In case they make a mistake, I'd get the chance to exchange it for a T of the proper gender. ;)

Good luck on the sexing, let us know how it turned out and/or post a pic of the "opened" molt on here ;)

I know, I know :D It was sold as G.aureostriata (I admit, I like the old name better) and spinnerets colour check ruled out the (quite unlikely) possibility of it actually being A.seemanni :D

I meant name as individual name, like Taz or Shiro or Ozzy or whatever :D

Male, hmm? I had a feeling like that. Well, still a good price I got it for - after all he has some time left. Moulted in late October (in the pet store) and he has yet to hook out. At 10 cm / 4', would that be penultimate or not yet? (assuming the gender is confirmed)
Oh well, I definitely not plan to breed so I guess when the time comes, I'll send him out to the world..

I'll try to open up the smithi exuvium in the afternoon, I didn't want to do that late at night.
She's doing tarantula yoga right now, by the way :D

Well, my attempt to do something about the exuvium failed, guess I was too clumsy :( also the crucial section was kinda mangled anyway. Next time, I guess.

just remember nothing is set in stone off ventral alone
a GREAT example here

yup, I know. I'm just thinking ahead for BOTH alternatives.

Be it male or female, I like that pulchripes nevertheless, so fascinating creature with awesome looks and interesting behaviour.
The family decided on a name - Igor :D easy to genderflip to Igorina in case the little eight legged monster turns to be female :D and yes, monster indeed, considering the way in which (s)he disposed of a superworm :D

A quick, not really good shot of Shiro, my just-moulted G.pulchra sling, munching on the exuvium :D

Little Shiro's getting colours after moult :) Finally stopped looking like a generic sling of its genus and put on some dark!

Shiny black butt

It's funny as the carapace seems to be a different colour shade from various angles - too bad the side shot turned out blurry, so here, shot from above at least

Yet another shot of Shiro's big cousin Igor. In light of recent pic thread about chaco possibly not being chaco, I'm PRETTY sure it's G.pulchripes but confirmation would make me feel reassured :D

and as I like to say, there is no such thing as too many A.versi pics - Taz the blue not-yet-fluff-ball nomming on another cricket.

Your pulchripes is most likely a pulchripes, yes. Her looks fit their description quite nicely ;)

It seems I was 'fortunate' to get TWO hellspawn Grammostolas. Igor (4' G.pulchripes) attacked my tweezers so savagely that he flipped over this morning when I was removing an old bolus I noticed.

Oh well, I shut him up with a superworm.

Little Shiro (cca 3 cm G.pulchra) marches furiously around the box, would-be-shouting "WHO DID THIS?!" "WHO WAS THAT?!" every time I as much as TOUCH the lid. Being the size (s)he is, it's quite cute and funny. "HEY YOU GIANT! COME AT ME BRO!" After moult, (s)he seems to have regained its usual persona - lightning fast vicious strike on anything and everything I drop there. I was worried about 'teleporting' Avic, but this little guy puts Taz to shame when it comes to speed. Surprisingly enough, Taz the A.versi is now my most calm tarantula. Got used to lid opening, learned not to web the lid.

Okay, here's Shiro with first lunch after moult.

different angle, from this one colouring seems closer to the actual colour I perceive by naked eye.

nom nom nom

Adela is being skittish as ever, it was a rare occassion when she didn't run to the hideout immediately after me beginning to open the lid..

Look at that velvet black.

She went 'home' after a while. Gonna rehouse her soon though, new enclosure already waiting, just need the substrate to dry up a bit more

Aaaand as usual, some blue goodness at the end. It's really funny how the T that worried me the most turns out to be the most relaxed now.

Sounds like my G. pulchripes girl when she's hungry. It's exactly the reason why I don't handle her - I don't trust her enough to keep her fangs to herself :D

They'd make one HELL of a couple :D

(and imagine the demonspawn babies..especially if they'd inherit the temperament :D )

In a spur of the moment, I decided to try whether my sweet, shy B.smithi is ready to eat.

She was.
