When you measure, it's accepted to measure from the tip of leg I to the lip of leg IV on the opposite side (diagonally).

I would estimate this A. seemani at 4.75" at the time of the molt, give or take a few tenths of an inch, given how much it spreads out normally.

This is usually because most G. rosea that are sold in pet stores are WC (wild-caught) and the store personnel isn't knowledgable enough to sex them accurately. They store receives them at that size. It's not uncommon for a pet store to sale a fully mature male as "unsexed."

This spider wasn't wild-caught; they told me they ordered this T from a dealer. One man said the tarantula's been there a year, but I highly doubt it could grow two inches in one year because they also said it was about an inch when it arrived. Well, it's not uncommon for them to sell females as unsexed either, so I really do not know the gender of this tarantula until it molts (whenever thay may be!!) :) Thanks for the tips on how to measure, but I wasn't measuring legspan.

After seeing that picture I'm pretty sure you're a girl :D

But back to the aggro male thing: yeah I guess it's as much a question of individual personality than anthing else. It's just that somethimes the personality seems to change when the male mature.

Thanks for that vote of confidence

I'd bet any money on the fact that this is a female tarantula. Taking into account of its size and legspan (which I haven't mentioned) and the simple fact that everything else has checked out, I would truly be shocked if this were a male.

Well, look at this, 4 full pages, most of which are flirty, and none from me ;)

Welcome aboard Sarah, very nice spider you've got there, HE/SHE is quite the looker.

Hi Mori,

Thanks :) - Well, I'm planning on getting a few more tarantulas.. :D (which ones, I haven't a clue - but they will be of a docile species, of course!) If anyone is interested in checking out this website I just stumbled across, here it is: http://www.lllreptile.com. It looks like a terrific site, and they have a price-match guarantee. I thought some of you might like to check it out.

Sarah,

Check the classifieds board on the site and look in the thread called certified dealers. They are the very best retailers (among others not listed here - make use of the review forum) as far as arachnids go. LLL Reptile has a iffy reputation. You also get a discount and freebee from those dealers if you let them know you're an AB member.

Here's a link to the thread: http://www.arachnoboards.com/ab/showthread.php?t=7155

I realize that, but you should know that tarantula measurements are usually given in legspan, not body length. If you purchase or sell a spider, approximate legspan should be given.

Hi Becca81,

I know, but rather than go with the usual measurement I just decided to measure the body length (just my daft curiosity) Chances are good I won't be selling any spiders, though :D I took some photos of my spider earlier, hopefully some of these tarantula experts on the boards can help me identify the gender - I'll be posting them shortly!

Sarah, you would be surprised. Many MANY members end up way over-collecting and needing to sell of parts of their collection.

Best of luck,
Mori

Hi sarah_88, welcome to the boards! my first two spiders were rose hairs! recently my female passed away, had her for about 10 years! My wife was terrified of spiders and wouldnt even go near them, but she became attached and was sad when she passed. recently however i got an A.Geniculta (my wife picked it out) which is really neat. we got it at about 1/4" along with some other slings, i had never raised spiderlings before but its really cool! you get to watch how them grow and gain their adult colors. its not as hard as i had thought! well anyhow, welcome to the boards! post some more pics of you and your spider! its obviously a welcomed sight.

Thank you, this is a pretty fun forum. I'm glad I joined, I've been learning so many different things about tarantulas :) I'm looking to purchase a few spiderlings already, but I'm wondering if it's too soon :? (hmmm.. nah, shouldn't be.) It might be considered a welcomed sight by a few, but that's what I'm worried about! ;)

I'd give it a month or two before buying any more, just to see when the novelty wears off if you are so gung ho about buying more. I'd say initially when you do start buying more ts, start out one at a time give yourself a couple of weeks between purchases build up gradually to keep from getting in deep too quick (your pocketbook will thank you).

Sarah,

this forum http://www.arachnoboards.com/ab/forumdisplay.php?f=24 is full of people selling tarantulas and other inverts (and some other non-inverts).

Best of luck with your current (and future) invert collection. :)
