is that the golden chaco which your planning on ordering, im not sure? if you cant get that you could have a look at a Brazilian Black there cute :)

taorchard1987,

The Brazilian Blacks aren't aggressive, are they? I didn't think they were; mainly the species from Asia and Africa are the ones who have their legs in a twist, generally :D I never thought to check for a Brazilian Black, though, I'll do a little reasearch on them and find out if it's a tarantula I might just be interested in (I don't see how I couldn't, but who knows) Indeed, it's a Golden Chaco (AKA Chaco Goldenknee/Chaco Golden Stripe) Honestly I don't know how many names they could give to a tarantula :) But yes, that's what I'm looking for. I'd rather prefer to order him/her online but I'm having a bit of a time developing a trust for online dealers.. It's not that there aren't honest people out there because I have faith that there are, the problem is finding them and praying that their prices aren't rediculous! I've seen a 3 inch unsexed Chaco for $40, but after shipping I'm looking at a $70 tarantula, and I don't even know if it's going to be a female after I put out that much cash. Hopefully though I'll come across one sooner or later.. One thing's for certain, they're hard to find!

Its not so strange around here... especially when the target of these compliments looks like you.. :}

I would strongly recommend spending the extra $$$ for a female.. as Toth said, the species you are interested in is slow growing and you will get a good while out of a male auro but a female could be around for 25-30 years.... but the cheapest way to do it would be to get an unsexed sling and just hope for the best (50/50 chance) also its kind of like christmas sometimes when they molt female.. it adds a suprise to your hobby and gives you somthing to look forward to.. I know when I have a T molt into a mature female I am pretty damn happy... also a sling will be less $$$

True, but as I'm new to the addiction (um...hobby..) I'd be deathly afraid of killing a sling or having something happen to it. I wouldn't have so much of a problem if I knew just what I was doing :D I suppose once I gather up enough courage I could order 3 slings just to increase my chances of getting a female, but then again I could be getting all males. Oh well, I'd still love them as much!

Really nice spider, after seeing the picture - who can blame it for not wanting to go back.

Well, he had to go back in his terrarium - I couldn't have taken him all the way to Walmart to buy his peat moss! :D I could have if the weather had been warmer, I suppose, but as I consider myself a somewhat reasonably intelligent person I would never intentionally put my little one in harm's way. (Uh oh.. I think I'm officially hooked) But, hey. What a great thing to be addicted to! {D

lol, i think most of the members on arachnoboards have taken a liking to you and your T.lol

Depending on how you look at it, that could be A: a good thing; or B: a bad thing! (Only joking - but being serious here, my image has never struck up so many compliments in such a short amount of time)
You people have too much time on your hands!! ;) :D
..I'm such a comedian. Well, at least I try. I suppose that counts for something.

Well,I am late but I will say that pic is burning HOT!!! I almost didnt see the rosie though,it took a minute to get that far(haha) What a lucky Tarantula!!! I used to think that I would have problems with T's as slings, but I havent lost one yet.I personally think they are easier to care for! I have a Auriostriaqta sling at about an inch plus. He is mellow!! I have alot of slings! Dont be scared to jump into the sling-world Sarah...it will be well worth it! Oh,AWESOME choice of music!!!

I just had to get a photo with my T today, so here it is - he's so adorable :)
(This was taken in the front room and I had to set my camera somewhere in order to take the shot, so I had to set it on an end table that's rather short). I had to kneel down with him crawling up my shoulder, but.. oh well, the good thing is it worked, because I got a decent photo (I think...). Anyway, here we are, my first tarantula and me! :D
I also wanted to mention that your G. rosea at that size, if it does not have the matting hooks is possibly a female :D

Welcome ;) That's a nice pic for sure... all in all :D

Sarah, the point Surena is making is pretty intresting - Are you sure you have a male rosea or do you hope/wish that you have?

Another point with males (besides ageing), combined with handling your T is pretty important to remember when planning a future T. The thing is that males from docile species can get a bit cranky when they mature. My mature male rosea for example is trying to behave like one of the most dangerous T's in my collection. As soon as he senses the slightest disturbance he goes into threat pose and I've seen him strike at the water dish repeatedly... so he's a pretty grumpy old fella. That could be another reason to go with a female.

Females that are docile will normally stay that way for the rest of their lives unless they are in pre-moult or stressed out for some reason.

I have found the opposite to be true with my collection. I had two mature Haplopelma males that were docile enough to hold. My H. maculata male calmed down after he matured, and I have a mature male Acanthoscurria sp. who is the cutest thing ever. He gives half hearted threat displays if I bug him, but he has never tried to strike at me.

Welcome to the boards Sarah, beware, it is full of horndogs!:D
Brazilian Blacks are awesome spiders in my opinion, they are docile, long lived and jet black beauties. Search for Grammostola pulchra to find info and pictures of them. And congrats on your new rosie, it is a very nice one.:)

Lorgakor,

Thanks for the warning, I think I might have found that out! :D (sorry guys, I can't help but pick on you.. but, thank you for the compliments ;) :D ) To be honest, I'm not sure which gender I have. I picked up a little book on tarantulas two weeks ago and it has information on how to go about finding out the gender of a T, but I never bothered checking the tarantula I have since (here we go again with the pet shop...) the guy at the pet shop told me this T was a he. That's a good reason to double check, I'd say :) This T is very docile when I pick him/her up and hasn't shown any sort of aggression so far (perhaps I just haven't bothered the T to that point yet!) .....:D Oh well, I guess I'll go bug my T and find out if 'he's' a he or a 'she'.. To be honest, it would be nice to have a female because she would live a longer life.

Hey Sarah the dealers on the boards are trustworthy (you could check out their reviews here) Many (some not listed wil also give discounts) give discounts to arachnoboard members and a lot throw in freebies:D Depending on where you are there is probably one within driving distance. Or if you you wait till the weather is warmer many will offer priorty mail shipping (but won't offer live guarentee).

By the way, most board members also have a good sense of humor and can handle some good natured teasing. (be warned though the flirting will becoe more shameless with time , ask any of the lovely ladies of AB (new calendar/poster idea perhaps, Mr.D or Satanika?).

Hi kenspidey,

Well, I can't tell you why you didn't receive a two page welcome.. but if this counts, welcome to the boards!! :D I'm new as well (I apologise, I know it's already quite obvious that I'm in the process of learning more about tarantulas.) And thanks, I'm really happy to have a T, especially a Rose as my first :) They truly are underrated, many people just don't see the beauty in them. They certainly aren't ugly by any means, they're one of the prettiest I've seen, in my opinion. To be honest I'm not sure if I have a female or male. The pedipalps are normal looking, they look just like another leg - smooth, rounded tips and two tarsal claws on each, no rounded 'bulbs', nothing like that... Does anyone know: are the pedipalps good indicators of what gender you have? If so, perhaps I do have a female.. I haven't the slightest clue as to what I'm doing :p I even googled 'female grammostola rosea' just to see what would come up - a picture came up of a tarantula with frighteningly similar pedipalps and.. it looks just like the one I have - labeled as a female! Well, maybe this T is a girl! This is exciting! {D

Thoth,

Thanks, I'll check 'em out :) Freebies... I've heard of some dealers 'throwing in' some slings for certain purchases, but.. I don't know, I just find that entertaining - they're 'throwing in' some slings... perhaps my sense of humour is a bit off :} Ah well. I'd rather pay a higher priced shipping rate and have my T arrive alive, I wouldn't want him or her to be uncomfortable any longer than actually needed in transit, in order to arrive safely from the dealer to me. Well, I think I know what sex my T is.. I think it's a girl :D

well i didn't see if you mentioned its leg span, but when a male matures, it will have bulbs on the underside of the end of each palp. they are quite easy to see, so you won't need a magnifying glass or anything :)

also on the first set of legs, each will have a tibial hook on the underside.

Well, apparently I can only quote one person at a time...

Sarah
You can cut and paste to quote more than one person.

Not sure anyone has noticed the T yet, you're a cutie!! And the T is darling, looks like a little cuddle bunny. Congratulations and welcome to the addiction.;)

I got my little 'un at a reptile fair over here (past six years have gone fast!) which I bought off of the BTS stall and the guy gave me his address and told me to send off the shedded skin with an SAE once 'it' got a bit bigger, which I did and thus I found out that 'it' was a 'she'.
My point is, if you are unsure you could probably do the same with a similar organisation over there, or (considering the reception) an experienced individual on these boards.

MizM,

Thanks :) Well, I just didn't realise realise I could cut and paste and it would automatically go into a quote - I thought I could only do that by clicking the quote button on a message to add a quote, and doing so would only allow me to quote one person, unless I cut and pasted a message.. which I didn't know I could do and it would still come up in the 'quote:' box.. well, I told you I was new to these bloody message boards! :8o  I'll get used to this one eventually... thank you :D

Xgrafcorex,

Thank you for that info, but how big are these supposed hooks? Are we talking about something the size of a tarsal claw, a little larger or smaller? Sorry, I just need something a tad more specific so I can safely say that I can tell what gender my T is :D
