Saw this guy in a pet store the other day labled as "birdeater". It looks like an asian species to me, and had some web spun around, but not a whole lot. But of course i wouldnt be asking you guys if i actually had faith in my own opinion. Any ideas?
@kevinlowl i do not, and there is at least one reason for that. Although I'll admit its tempting, being so close. Itd be better off in my hands than some random kid whose mom doesnt know any better... I've even done the research already. But i must be strong!
That's definitely NOT a "''bird eater"... Theraphosa sp. are usually much bigger than that. Meh, I wish the pet stores would get the "bird eater" complex OUT of their heads...as they DON'T eat birds in the first place...
@atraxrobustus i wouldnt say "dont". From what ive gathered, the name comes from somebody somewhere seeing one eat a bird in the wild. They can take on some birds, and given the chance im sure they would. But birds are usually in the air, so its just RARE. Too rare to justify it as a name, for sure.
The first pics the world saw of pink toes (or any south American t) were shown to the world eating a hummingbird...the word Avicularia actually means "bird eater"....but this is where the generic term birdeater originally comes from.
