I live in the northeast as well! I have also noticed a shortage of expos in my area. They generally are between 3 and 4 hours drive, though there is one in my city next week. Western NY (Buffalo/Rochester) seems to have quite a lot more expos.
My Ts live on a bookshelf in my bedroom, so I know they are at a comfortable temperature and they get light and dark. I also own cats, so the shelf is one that they can't jump up onto. Hopefully in our next house, I'll have an art studio again, and they'll live in there so I can see them while...
Okay, I NEED that Christmas sweatshirt.
Another place to try that I haven't seen mentioned is RedBubble. A portion of the price goes directly to the artist, and the quality of merchandise there is quite nice, I've bought some myself. (I also have a shop there, but no T stuff -- yet!)
My Ts are in my room, but not right next to my head. They are on a bookshelf, and I never hear them at night. The red runners I sometimes hear scurrying, but they're not very loud. I wouldn't mind them being closer, but I'd be concerned with disturbing them with my moving/getting up etc.
I'm pretty sure I got mine from the same vendor you found online :) I haven't seen them offered on any other sites, you could certainly try shows in your area though. The one I went to right outside of NYC did not have anyone besides that one vendor with them.
It's a shame they wouldn't do very well for enclosures, candles are my other addiction and I'm swimming in empty jars haha.
That said I have a sling in a deli cup with screen top because it's the only thing I had that would fit her. Seems to be ok.
I have little notebooks (about 2x3 inches) for each of my tarantulas to record feeding, molts, etc. You can use an app or spreadsheet on the computer too if you want, probably necessary when you start getting into double digits! But for now it works for me.
Mine is a small sling, she's been burrowed for about 2 months and I haven't seen her but her feeders disappear and sometimes dirt is moved around so I assume she's fine down there.
That one is on my wishlist too! They are gorgeous. I don't know if the kit comes with feeders, if not you can either get crickets / mealworms at your local pet store or order some red runner or dubia roaches. Nymph crickets and roaches would be a good size for spiderlings to eat.
Sounds like people got mostly everything covered already, but you don't need to dust your crickets with calcium for tarantulas, they don't get any benefit from it. Crickets are also notorious for dying fast, they're fine for now but in the future you might want to consider getting either dubia...
With my albo sling it's very obvious when it's hungry (spoiler: all the time) because it climbs up to the top of its burrow and pokes out. My other two just aren't as interested most of the time. I feed my chalcodes if he's poking out of his burrow after I open the enclosure. Like cold blood...
As pointed out above, tarantula venom is not the same as bee venom, so while it's possible that you may have a reaction, it's possible you won't either. And if you are not handling, the chances of you being bitten are extremely low. I use tongs or a paintbrush anytime I need to mess around in...
It's near me in Saratoga Springs, I don't know what it's like as I haven't been to that one, but I have been to that venue before. They had one back in May but I wasn't there.
