Assuming you're a new hobbyist with no prior experience, A. geniculata.

H. gigas is an old world fossorial species. This means it's a pet hole that you will not see very often, and if you ever need to deal with it for some reason that requires you to remove it from the enclosure (such as rehousing) you're going to have to dig up a very defensive spider that has venom known for being painful enough to send adult men running to the hospital. Not suitable for a person with little to no experience with tarantulas.

A. geniculata is a new world terrestrial species. They're attractive, get to impressive sizes, eat like a horse, and are confident enough to hang out in the open as they gain size. No competition here, even if you've had a couple Ts and could handle the H. gigas. Just make sure you keep your fingers out of the enclosure and use tongs to remove water dishes/boli, especially as it gets larger. These guys believe everything that moves is food until their fangs say otherwise.

I own and love both species, but if it was one or the other for me I'd go genic any day of the week.

Here's my boy Happy. He's a neat T.

I have three H gigas I bought as tiny slings. They all made burrows on the side of their enclosures, so they are far from “pet holes”. If it were me I would still choose the A geniculata over H gigas. Who wants a brown spider that runs to the bottom of the enclosure when u can have that amazing beast posted above?

Oh, pardon me, pet window then. :troll:

Mine is still a small juvie ATM, and it too has its tunnels along the side, but they're covered in bits of substrate and make it difficult to observe the T. After I rehouse it, there's no guarantee it'll burrow against the side. Most of my fossorials haven't, even when offered a pre-started burrow. :shifty:

Not even worthy of discussion; A. geniculata (the gorgeous eight-legged cuisinart).

where might there amazing prices be? ;) anyways, a lot of people end up killing the H gigs cause inexperienced, and A. geniculata is a great and beautiful species. honestly you'll probably end up with a pet cup of dirt with H. gigas.

H.gigas. sure it's a pet hole and you wont see it as much as the genic. However keeping an old world fossorial in a tub filled with dirt is like keeping chick norris in an enclosure, nothing short of awesome. I own the H.gigas and it's my 2nd favorite tarantula after P.muticus. Guess the apple dosent fall far from the tree does it?

If you're not into pet holes, then A. geniculata is the one for you. Huge appetite, great colors, and its got a thicc booty.

Some Ts here in the Philippines are cheaper compared to the US or Europe, some are pricier though, like Avics, pulchras to name a few.

Don’t get the H. gigas, you’re not experienced enough and it’s not fair, either to the spider or you, for you to own one. Go with the A. geniculata and get an H. gigas when you have more experience

I agree, genic is much better for less experienced keeper. But for accuracy sake, H. gigas is an eating machine too. I have 6 gigas juvies, and they are just as entertaining as my genic.
