I know this is your old post but, isnt those grass type things commonly found in aquariums?
Can you post some pics of your avic enclosures?
Those plants are from the petshop, just for decoration terrariums. Dunno if they're used for fish, too.

Go through my thread, you'll find plenty of pictures of my Avic tanks.

Pairing of Chilobrachys fimbriatus and some pictures :)

Damn, sorry man. Hopefully you'll get lots of his babies!
Fingers crossed! :)

Those last two are just astonishing! Getting a sling of each here in a few weeks I believe, what is their growth rate like?
Sloooow. Like chewing gum. Actually...worse. That is, for the Euathlus, the Homoeomma grows fairly quick considering they gain lots of size per molt.

The report of how the pairing of "Ares" and "Hera", my C. fimbriatus devils, went can be found in the Breeding Reports section HERE. If successfull, I'll probably get ~100 more from this. I decided that since I have a breeding pair that I raised myself with no problems, I should also pair them up. My experience isn't decades like some others on here, but having been in the hobby for close to 3 years now and owning multiple different species makes me confident, I'll be just fine. Fingers crossed Hera drops a nice sac! :D

Here's a short vid with some takes:

"Ares" & "Hera", Chilobrachys fimbriatus, 4.5" (MM) & 5.5" (AF) - Spiderporn #1 :D

"Ares" & "Hera", Chilobrachys fimbriatus, 4.5" (MM) & 5.5" (AF) - Spiderporn #2 :D

And these are some of "Ares" after I got him back into his enclosure. He was surprisingly mellow and just cooperated without any problems.

And some more pictures...

"Medeia", Acanthoscurria geniculata, ~7.75"-8" female - *nomnomnom*

Unnamed, Poecilotheria miranda, ~2.75" suspect female - quite calm this one in comparison to the suspect male I have

Thanks for checking!

I'm sure your collection will extend beyond mostly NW tarantulas too. OW t's can be a little intimidating at first, but you eventually reach a point where a threat pose just makes you say things like, "ahhh, you're happy to see me, isn't it cute?". You should remain alert when working with OW, but they're not that bad in the end. Plus, a big Lampropelma or Cyriopagopus female is just about a beautiful as tarantulas get. If I remember correctly, a P. irminia was among your first purchases? If you can handle a Psalmopoeus from the very beginning, you'll be fine with a bunch of OWs. It might not happen sometime soon, but I guarantee it will happen.
I had to dig this quote up and I can only say: Obviously, you were right JFB! Remind me never to bet with you, because I'm assuming the bill for the beers would be mine in that case :D

Some updates...

Ares is one hell of a handsome mister! Good luck on your breeding Jan.
Thanks! He's actually somewhat more mellow now as MM than before. I recon when I rehoused him he must've been in premolt.

Some update pics of the T's... :)

Unnamed, Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens (GBB), suspect female, ~3" - this one molted a week ago and has returned to being a WDU (Waste-Disposal-Unit) :D

Unnamed, Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens (GBB), suspect female, ~3" - interestingly like a bottomless pit, as the T doesn't seem to put on weight :o_O:

"Gemma", Euathlus sp. "blue femur" (hobby "pulcherrimaklaasi") - she's eating again and with gusto :)

"Gemma", Euathlus sp. "blue femur" (hobby "pulcherrimaklaasi") - *speechless* just too beautiful to describe, you'd have to see her in person...gosh!

Unnamed, Avicularia geroldi, ~3" juvie - molted a week ago this one and now shows full adult coloration as well

Unnamed, Avicularia geroldi, ~3" juvie - pay attention to the BLUE (!) satae on the abdomen, not one bit of red this is the "real deal" !

"Kamala", Brachypelma auratum, ~5" female - still skittish, still easily defensive kicking off her bristles...besides that: Gorgeous T :D

"Adena", Brachypelma smithi, ~5" female - usually very friendly smithi, but always spreads fangs even without rearing up when disturbed

"Star", Avicularia versicolor, ~2.25" unsexed - gonna molt soon enough again I recon :)

"1of4", Euathlus sp. "red", suspect female ~2" - love their coloration...great contrast.

"4of4", Euathlus sp. "red", suspect female ~2" - ...this attacks anything that moves even prey bigger than "her" :D

That's it, I'm going back to admire "Gemma" some more now...later! :D

Ephebopus murinus shows up...

Beautiful pictures as always :) Soo jealous of Gemma!
Thank you. Also: Go find one yourself :D

Will post these in the chat section too, as it was just recently discussed again that these are true petholes - at least mine isn't. She's out every night, or ever other night at least, often roaming around even. She has remodelled her enclosure quite some obviously and since I saw her during feeding today (afternoon btw!) I thought I'd snatch some pics and post those. Enjoy!

"Asteria", Ephebopus murinus, ~5" female - *nomnomnom*

"Asteria", Ephebopus murinus, ~5" female - different angle

"Asteria", Ephebopus murinus, ~5" female - her enclosure: Her burrow is actually to the left at the deepest end of the corkbark

"Asteria", Ephebopus murinus, ~5" female - "More mealworms? GIMME!"

"Asteria", Ephebopus murinus, ~5" female - *nomnomnom* the 2nd... :D

"Asteria", Ephebopus murinus, ~5" female - ...and again different angle :)

So that's what an E. murinus looks like. Mine is actually more stubborn and calm than defensive and skittish...oddball? Perhaps, but I like her the way she is because of it :D

P. fasciata & A. sp. "Amazonica" (Manaus)

Just sharing a few more picture I just took...

First my P. fasciata juvie. Suspecting a male here, but this one is a molt-muncher so I'm still unsure.

Unnamed, Poecilotheria fasciata, ~4" juvie - thought he'd sit still while I take some pictures...fail!

Unnamed, Poecilotheria fasciata, ~4" juvie - "he" jetted back into hiding behind his corkbark, but came out after 10 seconds already again to check...:D

Unnamed, Poecilotheria fasciata, ~4" juvie - I'm pretty sure I'll have "fun" when the time comes to rehouse this one again, or ship him out. *sarcasm* Very defensive!

"Kyla", Avicularia sp. "Amazonica" (Manaus), ~4.5" - this is the one I paired up, here shown in her new enclosure (formerly the one beloging to the male)

Suffice to say - that particular Poecie has been easy to deal with so far, but now in this juvie enclosure he has become way more defensive. It's as if he suddenly realized "this is mine - and you stay out of it - am I clear?" :D Interesting for sure, but so much making dealing with this one any more easy. Although I will say that feeding is really easy: Drop food in and it's usually caught in mid-air before it has time to touch his corkbark ;) Maintenance is easiest done while T is eating.

Updates on Avics, Poecies, E. sp. "blue femur" and more...enjoy!

Has been awhile since my last picture-update and since it's getting close to christmas (24th here in Germany) I figured, I'd update a good bunch. Here we go...

Genus Avicularia

Unnamed, Avicularia geroldi, ~3" suspect male - a little hunched up after the last molting :)

Unnamed, Avicularia geroldi, ~3" female - this is a "true" geroldi, please note there's no whatsoever red satae on her, but very blueish instead!

Unnamed, Avicularia geroldi, ~3" female - she's pretty food intense, too :D

Unnamed, Avicularia geroldi, ~3" female - lovely personality otherwise, kinda skittish though

"Star", Avicularia versicolor, ~2.5" suspect female - she's growing nicely and doing well as my adult female does :)

"Star", Avicularia versicolor, ~2.5" suspect female - come on Joyce...you know you want to try again! How can you resist their beauty? :D

Unnamed, Avicularia velutina, ~2.25" suspect female - I swear these are one of the slowest growing Avics EVER! grmbl...

Unnamed, Avicularia velutina, ~2.25" suspect female - Fact: These were sold as species "Isla Margarita", too. Same species however.

Unnamed, Avicularia velutina, ~2.25" suspect female - also one of the smaller species in the genus, hardly getting bigger than 4"

Genus Brachypelma

"Adena", Brachypelma smithi, ~5" female - she's still not much of a hairkicker at all, but she's a bit skittish instead

"Kenno", Brachypelma boehmei, ~3" male - he's getting close to a molt again. This boy is fun, interesting personality. At times he attacks outright, other times he kicks hairs the moment I move his cage :D

Genus Chilobrachys

"Ares", Chilobrachys fimbriatus, ~5" mature male - he's spending most of his time out in plain few at the mound of his burrow nowadays

"Ares", Chilobrachys fimbriatus, ~5" mature male - as mentioned before, these have 3 defensive mechanisms: 1) threaten, 2) frantically run around, or 3) vanish into their burrow

"Hera", Chilobrachys fimbriatus, ~5.75" female - caught her being out completely after I gave her cage a wetdown

"Hera", Chilobrachys fimbriatus, ~5.75" female - she's way less defensive than the male so far...

"Hera", Chilobrachys fimbriatus, ~5.75" female - however, if she drops a sac, I expect that to chance radically :D

"Hera", Chilobrachys fimbriatus, ~5.75" female - a beauty, though - isn't she?

"Hera", Chilobrachys fimbriatus, ~5.75" female - these have really grown on me, not gonna lie. Awesome OW species to keep!

Genus Euathlus

"2of4", Euathlus sp. "red", ~2.25" female - probably the sweetest of my quadrouple

"Gemma", Euathlus sp. "blue femur", ~4.5" female - *nomnomnom*

"Gemma", Euathlus sp. "blue femur", ~4.5" female - aaaand another during feeding :)

"Gemma", Euathlus sp. "blue femur", ~4.5" female - top-view, little hunched up

"Gemma", Euathlus sp. "blue femur", ~4.5" female - probably the BEST picture I took of her so far! This one turned out extremely nice! :D

Genus Hapalopus

"Harlequin", Hapalopus sp. "Colombia Large", ~2.75" unsexed - molt-muncher through and through, grr :bruised:

"Harlequin", Hapalopus sp. "Colombia Large", ~2.75" unsexed - extremely satisfying watching to hunt, they're like mini, colorful A. geniculata and attack anything that moves, hehe :D

Genus Homoeomma

"Neelam", Homoeomma sp. "blue" (Peru2), ~6" mature male - still going strong, for the most part extremely calm actually

"Neelam", Homoeomma sp. "blue" (Peru2), ~6" mature male - here's a better one with him stretched out completely nearly

"Jewel", Homoeomma sp. "blue" (Peru2), ~5" female - this one is pretty defensive for the most part and overall very skittish

Genus Poecilotheria

"Stripes", Poecilotheria miranda, ~3" suspect female - usually pretty skittish, but so far calms down quickly usually

"Stripes", Poecilotheria miranda, ~3" suspect female - she seemingly rather relies on her camouflage mostly instead of bolting

"Takhisis", Poecilotheria fasciata, ~4" suspect female - yes, I was suspecting a male here but this one is a molt-muncher and the folio stripe...well molting right now why I type this - so fingers crossed!

"Takhisis", Poecilotheria fasciata, ~4" suspect female - certainly one of my more defensive tarantulas, demands tons of respect dealing with this one :D (Note: I sprayed down into her webbing since I could't reach her waterdish as she's in molt preparation in these pictures)

Hey Jan, sorry I haven't been by for a while, but nice to see a roundup of (part of) your collection, they're all looking beautiful! I enjoyed seeing that quote you dug up about the OWs ... must be pretty amusing in hindsight! :)

Wishing you a great Christmas Jan!

Same to you, Michael! I dug that quote up because it was so true in the end. It's what many say: It takes time for most responsible keepers, but it will happen. :) Enjoy the holidays!

Rest in peace, buddy!

Sadly, my MM Avicularia diversipes has passed as of 26th December after 2.5 years in my care. I raised this one from a sling and it was one of my first Avic slings (among a load of other Avics). He always had a temper and tried to tag me at least two times (little brat!) once resulting in his breakout with him ending up on my bedroom wall, hehe. I'll miss this guy and certainly need to get a new sling next year to try for a female...therefore: RIP buddy!

"Phaedra" wishes a happy new year 2015 and P. fasciata molted fine

"Phaedra", Psalmopoeus irminia, ~5.25" adult female - she's out today evening and I quickly took a couple pictures

"Phaedra", Psalmopoeus irminia, ~5.25" adult female - this T keeps amazing me, as she came to the front window when she heard my voice, didn't open her cage though, she'd probably vanished if I tried

"Takhisis", Poecilotheria fasciata, ~4.25" unsexed - still unsure about this T, ventrally looks female, but the munched up molt didn't show any spermathecae...oh well!

"Takhisis", Poecilotheria fasciata, ~4.25" unsexed - pretty sure I'll see soon enough, with the leggyness I'm once again tending towards male...

"Takhisis", Poecilotheria fasciata, ~4.25" unsexed - doing the stick :) This T has calmed down a little - though I contribute that to the fact that it's just 4-days post-molt :D

So whatever: I'm hoping you'll have a good start into 2015, with lots of new T's, more good experiences, tons of viable sacs after pairings and overall just a great year. I'm sure, it'll be better than mine.

All the best,
Jan

A. versicolor rehoused and short appearance of T. violaceus

I decided to rehouse "Lin", my MF A. versicolor out of her jar into the former enclosure of my A. avic - and vice versa. Why? Because the little A. avic first and foremost didn't use the space provided and had problems climbing (she's old) even post-molt. So I decided to minimize risk of injury for her by exchanging enclosures with the versicolor. "Lin" looked somewhat scrunched in there and I saw her frequently at night hanging out on the side - her legspan is nearly reaching the substrate! Hence...rehouse. Went smooth for the A. avic...not so much for the versi (thanks for the prophecy Chad - she's become quite the little brat!) as she went on biting the straw I used to prod her into the catchcup for awhile before finally giving that up. Personality? Yes - with attitude :D Putting her into the new enclosure went smooth, though.

"Lin", Avicularia versicolor, ~4.5" female - much better!

"Lin", Avicularia versicolor, ~4.5" female - she can stretch out here completely which is nice to see...and she actually explorers the cage :D

"Saranyu", Tapinauchineus violaceus, ~4.5" female - she made an appearance but the flash caused her to shield herself immediately - I feel bad :(

Time for some updates, yes? First of all: My C. fimbriatus female "Ares", has sealed herself in after widening her burrow quite some.
Last night I've seen her from the little window she left on the side of the enclosure webbing like crazy in there - I'll check on her again mid of week,
don't want to disturb her too often, but it could be she's preparing for a sac....or molt in the worst case. Fingers crossed!

"Star", Avicularia versicolor, ~3" suspect female - Moltmuncher! *hrmpf* But hungry after the last molt and looking great!

"2of4", Euathlus sp. "red", ~2.25", female - these are doing well and I'm considering to try mating them with the MM I have...hmm :sarcasm:

Sling #3, Euathlus sp. "blue femur" (hobby pulcherrimaklaasi), ~1.5", unsexed - so skittish as slings these are, kicking hair even, but doing well

Juvie #2, Avicularia geroldi, ~2.75", suspect female - I have to admit these are very different in personality, all 3 of them. Interesting...

Juvie #2, Avicularia geroldi, ~2.75", suspect female - One is leaning more to the defensive side, one couldn't care less and the third is skittish like hell..

"Moriko", Psalmopoeus cambridgei, 7" female - This is the one that lost the right pedipalp in her last molt, she's worrying me slightly...not really eating

"Moriko", Psalmopoeus cambridgei, 7" female - I've since raised humidity in her cage (moistened substrate some + bigger waterdish) and she seems to do better

"Aurelia", Holothele incei, ~2.5" female - had to lure her out to check on her as I haven't seen this one for 6 months ongoing - not even during feeding

"Aurelia", Holothele incei, ~2.5" female - I suspect her to be in premolt as she seems slightly sluggish and left her alone immediately

"Jewel", Homoeomma sp. "blue" (Peru 2), ~5" female - she's quite defensive after the last molt and ontop of being skittish it's kinda interesting

Juvie #1, Avicularia geroldi, ~3", suspect female - this is the third of the triplets I have to gain adult coloration - yay!

Juvie #1, Avicularia geroldi, ~3", suspect female - these are true geroldi without any red satae and I'll have to rehouse them sometime this month

Hope you enjoyed! Thanks for checking on my pictures, appreciated.

It's good to see you pop back in every once in a while with an update.
Sure. I don't see myself leaving AB anytime really :D

Also - good news: "Hera", my C. fimbriatus girl has actually done it: Laid a sac! Fingers crossed all goes well with it!

Mmmm, Jan. I need an A. geroldi or fifteen in my life. If you breed your Euathlus sp. "red" please be a dear and take pictures of the eggs and first instar, etc. I am really interested in breeding them as well because everyone needs five in their collection. But their size is so daunting. I'd like to see pictures of the involved process and can't find very much on the subject.
