Say hello to my new Pokie Ornata

I've always wanted a pokie since i started the hobby. On Friday i went into a petshop just to buy some locustsa and seen a small container labelled ' Fringed Indian Ornamental', 'Ornata' for £25 so i thought hmmm do i have the guts to actually own a pokie???? Needless to say i ended up walking out with a new T. Its got the biggest appetite i've known for a sling. Here are the pics below. Sorry the lighting was'nt all that good where i took the pics, it was enjoying a criket at the time

like i said not the best pics, ill try for some more

Taorchard 1987, that's a cute little bugger! How big is he/she, and how big are the crickets you've been using? I've been feeding halved adult crickets to my slings and decided to purchase a few (very) small crickets just to see if they'd go after them (cutting the heads off and maiming the back legs a little so they won't kick too much; with the halved adults I just cut the back legs off) apparently, they just don't care for them or they just aren't hungry! So much for my 'hard effort' ;) :)

lol i no what u mean, ive not long threw a few crix in there thinkin they'll last a day or two, it snapped em straight up the greedy sod,lol. heres a pic on the size of crix. The woman in the shop said they are a size 3 :? there is also a pic of a molt which was inside the container i got it in, just so you can get an idea on the size, cant 'unravel it tho' to fragile. Thanks for the compliments

the T is about 4cm max so still tiny

hey congrats on the pokie. an ornata is my sole pokie also. if you want to soften up the molt to reposition the legs, just spray it gently with water, i use the same bottle i use to mist enclosures. i had to do the same thing with my ornata's last exuvium since it was in its webbed up burrow with it and only removed it when i rehoused the t.

It sounds like you've got a hardy little eater there; my Brachypelma vagans is a real pig. The other slings are little dainty eaters compared to the B. vagans. This one just drags the cricket over to the water dish, sucks it dry and then throws it in :rolleyes: I have to clean out that specific water dish very thoroughly every time I feed them. It is a riot though to go in my room to check on them and see the cricket propped against the water dish with the sling on top of it. Thanks for the pictures, it is a little tiny yet... but not quite as tiny as mine {D You're welcome. That cricket looks about the same size as the ones I've given to my own slings. Go figure, they won't go after the tiny crickets yet they'll go after the bigger, fatter halves!

Tom you need to take a leaf out of my book and do some bargain hunting from mail order dealers or better still go to the Kettering show on sunday 2nd april and the BTS expo on may 21st;)

I got a P. ornata just a tiny bit smaller than yours from www.thespidershop.co.uk for just £4! Trust me, pet shops will rob you blind! The BTS bulletin board is a great way to get bargain spiders, as most of the spiders sold are from hobbyists who aren't really in it for the money. I recently got an adult female Phormictopus cancerides from there for £15 whereas I've seen pet shops charge the likes of £45 for one.

Just you wait till the BTS show, stuff there is usually at least half the price of pet shops. I have seen decent sized L. parahybana slings at shows for 50p! Now that's value!

If there's anything you're after in particular, just wait till a show to get it and you won't be disappointed!:)

£4!!!:mad: I am going to the BTS show this year. The T's which i would really like to get my hands on are as follows;

A.Metallica
C. Crawshayi (adilt, too impatient to wait for a sling to grow)
Chromatopelma cyaneopubescens
Poecilotheria miranda
C. Theorelli
and maybe some kind of horned baboon
