I don't have that great a sense of smell and I don't get my face close enough to distinguish a subtle T smell verses a musky peat moss smell or freshly dropped bolas smell or a dying cricket smell. I'll have to investigate this further. I do believe all T's have smells. I have had MM's (from across a room) make sperm webs within 24 hours of a female's molt. They had to smell something.

You dont smell the T itself...its the enclosure. If you wanna try to up close sniff a LP go ahead.
I can smell it the second I open it up and its not bolus etc, its a distinctive smell that is not unpleasant at all.

To update, I think I figured out what mine was. I found a tiny area where a few mold spots were growing on the substrate. It was hard to see unless I looked very closely. I pulled a bit of the substrate out and sure enough, the smell seemed to be coming from that. I just rehoused with all new substrate not days ago. Kinda sucks

Never noticed any odor from L. parahybana but widows, L. hesperus in particular, seem to have a distinct odor. Not bad at all, really. Kind of sweet, spicy, and musty at the same time. I've actually smelled the same aroma from different kinds of wood. Kinda strange.
i smelt that. always figured some kinda decay product. it's vaguely appealing whatever it is... smells like widows mmmmm

some thing to consider... human chemical senses (taste & smell) are highly variable and probably somewhat subjective (as all our senses have autofilters that may or may not be self configurable). for example, about ~10% of ppl produce some chemical that i find absolutely foul! it is not a hygiene thing... they just make a product that does not jive with my sense of smell. the interesting thing is that the few ppl i have talked to about this had NO idea what i was talking about. the ironic thing is that typically i have a "bad" sense of smell

as i kinda said, i had always assumed i was smelling decay products... but my centipedes smell different than tarantulas... and some tarantulas smelled different. when i had hundreds and hundreds of individually caged bugs plus thousands of roaches my room had an interesting melange to it. kinda smelled like the best parts of the way a zoo smells (at least to me. i like a lot of the biological process smells that others seem to find offensive)

and i definitely know who i am going to bring with me to hunt LPs.... Fran of the Super Nose! (that reminds me once again of training dogs to hunt bugs... if i ever get out to live with my mom i am really tempted to try to train up her beagle to help me hunt purse webs and trapdoors :D)

Further evidence that my Ts hate me - they are absolutely odorless - the closest I've come to being seduced by pheromones is the day my versi projectile-pooped me .... :(

if you want to get all snitty, mr. spitty you should make sure you are being precise and accurate

for instance... do you mean to use same side leg span or diagonal leg span? it makes a difference ;)

oh, and in point of fact... the scientific community generally uses BODY LENGTH *not* legspan... granted the hobby tends to use legspan... but if you are trying to be all up in someone's face you might as well, you know, be right ;)

Its really obvious what I am about to say, but if somebody want to get a better chance to smell their particular smell, just move her to an empty enclosure, like a 12 gallon or a an empty plastic cage.

Theres no way you can mistake the dirt and plants smell of an enclosure with the T smell :) Totally different.
