This topic just talked me out of this species.
The stink from my geckos (who I miss dearly) was bad enough, and the mealworms also stink. No more pet smells!
{D
Lol!

The smell is really particular and I might even say I like it. Its really subtle and very particula. You can only smelll it getting considerable close to the T (8 inches or so)

Lol no thanks. I absolutely love blondis but their buts dont love me :D.
Im really sesitive to their hairs, let alone sniffing her buts for funn {D

Ps: When I used to keep over 12 large female blondis I was itchy in my hands and forearms for over A YEAR, non stop. :D

Never noticed any odor from L. parahybana but widows, L. hesperus in particular, seem to have a distinct odor. Not bad at all, really. Kind of sweet, spicy, and musty at the same time. I've actually smelled the same aroma from different kinds of wood. Kinda strange.
That sounds exactly what my scorps smell like.

I'm really interested to see what do you guys think about this and if in fact you have catched this "smell" in your Parhybanas too :D.
I'm going to have to say I agree with this, (thought I was buggin')

Yes I have noticed that smell only in LPs,
about a year ago when I ordered two males from a member here on the
boards and then again last month when I received a freebie LP ...
there was defnitely a distinct smell...

At first with my two males from a year ago I thought they had been sick,
and that was the cause of the odor,
(since they eventually both passed away within 3 days of having them),
but I smelled it again months later on another random LP!

Seems it just might be the species..

That's really cool :). Wonder if it is genetic. Maybe you guys should breed your smelliest LPs together to create a form of super-pungent Ts :D.

For those that have noticed the smell, was it kinda minty or like menthol? I was just trying to take pics of my regalis when I picked up a faint odor. Remembering this thread, I sniffed in my little LP's tank and rather than smelling like earthy substrate, it was weird and kinda like menthol...or something. My LP is only a bit bigger than an inch.

another idea...

perhaps the scent comes from their saliva.. like from when they "bathe"... ???

also, im not sure but i thought i could smell a bit of something from my adult female P. murinus the other day, it was after she got really angry at me for messing up her webbing.. ;P but its ok, i said i was sorry.. :}

Yeah!

It can be described somehow as minty...Is true :)
Its a veery particular smell that I have never smell in any other specie :)

What is even more interesting is that, I have noticed that when the T gets agitated or somehow pissed off the smell gets to be more noticeable...
So its seems like it has to do with some kind of pheromones smell, the tarantula is segregating it .

Did you mean like, a secretion? Hmm...
Also, if you mean menthol like newports musty, then I agree.. But if its minty like Crest or Colgate, then no.. LoL

So it seems we're onto a new topic, ha..
Truly new topics don't happen just everyday here..

I just took a whiff of mine again and there's no doubt, there is a definite smell. More like menthol but not exactly. Kinda a sweet, menthol smell. I hope others can chime in here as there are tons of LPs out there; I'm sure this is something that can be supported or refuted by a large sample size.

If you start selling hybrids on the boards Fran, we'll know what happened.

I don't have a very sensitive sense of smell but my wife can smell the most subtle of smells. Maybe some people can smell the parahybanas and others can't. You have a gift, Fran. :) Use it wisely.

My fat female certainly doesn't "smell". Are you sure there isn't something else in the cage causing some odor?

Maybe they just pooped?
