I have a character on a game (Warcraft) who has a pet spider named Charlotte. But no real ones. :)

I have emotional attachment to ALL my animals... and not in the "Oh they are my children" way, and not so much so that I am a complete mess if they die... but they are living critters, and I do get attached :)

I get less attached to other people, than my animals lol
Same here! {D I mean, I can get attached to people, too, but hearing about animal cruelty makes me sadder than hearing about cruelty to my own species. I don't know why.

We name everything. We don't have a Charlotte though, I tend to steer towards more ridiculous, funny names. Like Firechief Mittens. I enjoy naming things, and I enjoy the attachment I have to my T's. Especially our MM B. albopilosum, which I'm sure most of you are already aware of, haha...but he was my first, so I'm allowed.

My first tarantula was a male Brachypelma albopilosum too. :)

I used to name them, but after about ten spiders, I gave up on it. I didn't have a Charlotte though. I think the most creative name I came up with was "Emilia", for my Brachypelma emilia. :D After I read this thread, I felt a sudden urge to name a spider, so my Ephebopus uatuman is known from today as "Lollipop".

You're implying that they're nothing more than baseball cards to me, and I can assure you they are not.

The greatest pleasure I gain from inverts is observing their behaviors. While I'll be sad when they die or move on to new homes, I can't say I have any emotional attachment to them.
That does say you have an emotional attachment to them. Unless sadness and it's expression are nonemotions that I have confused with real emotions for too long.

I don't have a Charlotte. Actually, I don't name my tarantulas (or scorpions or snakes or fish or beetles) and the fact that some hobbyists do has always perplexed me.
I like naming things because I get to make connections between things that are otherwise unrelated. It also gives me the chance to go Google crazy and I inevitably end up learning something.

I've decided to name all my Ts in the theme of Chibcha mythology (they were the people from whom the El Dorado tale came).

My G. rosea is named Pacha -- Earth in Chibcha (because she's brown and terrestrial) -- Pachamamma is Mother Earth, but that just seemed a little much....

My H. lividum is named Huitaca -- she's the goddess of drunkeness and wanton behavior (which made sense in my little head given the unpredictable nature of lividum) and sometimes is also married to Bochica (who kind of started the Chibcha culture in a sense) so that would make Huitaca powerful and stubborn. She ended up getting turned into an owl or the moon because she was so bad (which in my mind goes with the blue).

I already have four other Chibcha names picked out and assigned to the next four species I intend to buy. I've already printed out the name tags for the aquariums that I don't even own yet... ha ha.

A long time ago, I had a black widow which I named Lilith who is a Mesopotamian demon, the bearer of disease, illness and death. I named her that as a joke to make fun of the people who are scared of things that we don't really need to be scared of. It's supposed to be ironic.

And in high school, I named my viola Freyja who is the Norse goddess of beauty and love.

I don't name everything after mythological figures, it just seems that those names come out the coolest. :)

My naming theme used to be, the T would get a name once they did something cool (like molt while I was watching, scare the crap outta me, show extra 'personality', etc.)

Lately, I've been slack on that.. and have just been throwing out names that come to mind lol

So basically you just said what I was implying was true. Actually, I bet even people who collect baseball cards have emotional attachments to them. Sometimes people just like to name their inverts because it's easier to say "Belle flipped her water dish again!" than saying "my Grammostola pulchripes flipped her water dish again!"
