Hey guys I recently got my first usambara and my mom did some research after I made sure she knew noone has ever died from a tarantula bite and she is worried because I am only 13 that I could die from a bite can someone debunk this?

how much do you weigh? Do you have any health issues? both are more important than age, (I only ask these questions because depending on these answers you could have a worse reaction). I would say no, it cannot kill you, unless you have some health issue

Then it will be ridiculously painful, and probably include a visit to the ER. You shouldn't die, unless you're allergic. Just respect the spider.

I expected as much but I doubt a hospital would do much other than give me a tetanus shot.

you'd be surprised. Kid comes in and says he was bitten by a spider, they will pay alot of attention, so will the media, so do your research on first aid and only go to the ER if you have to. Unless you want bans on Ts

I weigh 190 and have no health conditions.

You are 13, and 190lbs with no health conditions, that's good. Then just don't get bitten. It's strong venom. There are no recorded human fatalities due to a tarantula bite, that doesn't mean it hasn't happened. And like any foreign substance, particular ones full of a variety of proteins and peptides like T venoms are, there is always the risk of going into shock due to an allergic reaction and potentially dying if not brought to a hospital in time. However going into shock could happen to anyone with any tarantula bite or substance like peanuts or tree nuts. The problem is most people don't learn this until it actually happens.

I dont believe I said anywhere it was my first T?
you're right, you said first usambara, my bad... you might be mature enough if you've been raising Ts for a while, but definitely not the average 13 year old, so keep your friends far away from it, and not just for your sake. If you're mature enough to keep an OBT you're mature enough to be told that WE, all of us in the hobby, you, and all tarantulas are in this community together. A couple of kids end up in the hospital and it ruins it for ALL of us. Good luck and have fun. Arachnoboards is a great place to learn and ask questions.

First things first: I was bitten by a black widow in 1992, when I was an 8-year-old. It happened because I was catching them in my cousin's cellar during a visit to Nashville. When I went to the ER, I got no special treatment, I did not get extra attention. The idea that if you get bitten you will get extra attention because you are 13 is not true. Unlike tarantulas, people have died from black widow bites. Less than 1% of bite victims die, but it does happen.

To further the discussion, though, no, your spider's bite is not deadly. If you get bitten, you'll wish it was, because old world venom is not pleasant, but you will not die. It'll ruin your week with muscle cramps, fevers, headaches, and nausea; but, you won't die. The only way to avoid a bite is to take preventative measures every time you do any work with your T. You simply cannot react faster than it can attack, so all you can do is make sure you aren't in a position to get tagged.

to be honest 13's a bit steep for an old world of such caliber. I shouldn't be the one to judge though as I've no experience with them besides a few incidents and mishaps my friends share with me. Be careful! How in the world did you convince your mom to let you get a coked up death dealer? I joke of course but they are the hyper little things aren't they? BE CAREFUL!

Think about your parents too. If it escapes or you leave a cage unlocked, will your parents be in the position to get bitten. You'd be surprised what people will do. I told my mom how my African bullfrog tried to bite me. Moments later she told me she put her hand in and nothing happened. If something did happpen she could have a substantial puncture wound. I'm 14, If I had the opportunity to get one I would keep a strict procedure to avoid any contact at all. Will I get an OBT? Not anytime soon. I have the necessary respect, and feel confident in my abilities to not get bit, and if I did I believe I would be fine, in pain, but I've dealt with pain before. BUT even the best (which I am not) get complacent and get bitten. The fact that I am a kid makes me more cautious about owning one because as I said before the media would run wild with a story like that. I refrain from owning one not for my own safety, but for this hobby's.

This is exceptionally responsible behavior. As a member of the hobby I can't thank you enough.

Actually, Black Widow's have a 5% mortality rate.
Depends on the source. I have seen your rate and his. The point is the mortality rate is low, though caution should still be exercised. Mortality raates for most spider bites are incredibly low, even for highly toxic genus like Phoneutria or Hadronyche/Atrax. That doesn't mean there is no danger nor that caution isn't required - just that the chances of death are generally unlikely.
