It's just the Top layer that is "Chunky" but when I start her burrow today I will smash the clumps up. I also will be adding a couple of inches to the subsrate.
I don't think that it matters too much if it is a little chunky.

I didn't think so either, I think Deschain is trying to set me up for a Bite Report :embarrassed: ;)

How long did you have your lividum?

I've had the one in the pic for about 9 months now. I have one other at present, and have had others as long as I've been in the hobby. My first was a lividum...a male that could be handled.

No...that's not it at all. I just really love the Haps. and want to make sure they're taken care of as best as possible.
I just said it looked like the substrate I could see needed to broken down some, if you weren't going to change it or add something else (which both will require a capture). You should always have the tank done before you put the occupent in...especially defensive species.

And maybe it is just me, but the pieces in the pics, look to be close to her size...now they are strong, and they do produce a very strong, thick layer of webbing, and the chances may be slim to none that their burrow would collapse...but I'd rather be safe than sorry. Just my experience with my Ts and different substrates.

I had the enclosure already setup before I purchased it. I just measured the soil with my eyes to be 6", but when measured it with my ruler it was only 4.5". So it is all fixed now 6.5" and I started a burrow to. This isn't my first Haplo, I've had/have a H. Longpidum, C. Paganus, and a H. Albostriatum, and all of them constructed burrows without me starting one for them, so thats why I didn't start one. Thanks for the tips though.

Ah! Now I can see better...that's fine the way it is. It just looked to be all giant clumps from your other pics.

No...you shouldn't see much of her. A happy Hap. is an invisible Hap. Glad she's already burrowing...she must be thanking the tarantula gods after that stint in the petstore.

Here my lividum

Anyone venture to guess the sex? I don't think it's mature yet it's around 5".

saw this guy for 30$ at the pet shop. it is WC and appears to be male, well at least thats what his ventral shot looked like. Only his next molt will tell for sure. it looks as if he could molt any day now too. and if it turns out to be female, then i guess i'll have alot of slings someday when i get a male. ...will work well with my female.

he was a bit shy though.

either way, for 30$ adding some "new DNA" to the Tarantula CB gene pool can never hurt.

that lividum is confirmed a female..males are brown all over and skinny at the legs...they do not have any blue at all on them...

well jeff, i'd agree with you if that lividum was mature. The males only get that way when they are mature. this guy is not mature at all, he is only maybe 4"

Despite my tendency to never give in to such things, the terrible pet shop in town happened to have a newly arrived Haplopelma lividum the last time I wandered in for pinky mice. She's a beautiful specimen, but they had her on wood chips and such... very dry... and since she had only been there for a few hours (she had yet to even be priced) I decided to salvage her. I had been meaning to purchase one of these for a considerable length of time now, so I suppose it's not too terribly bad a deal...

Anyway... on to the pics!

She got pretty pissed at the camera at this point... offered some nice poses for the lense though...
