I have an A. Avicularia, and im looking to expand my collection. The pet store is selling Indian Violet, Mexican Fireleg, Mexican Red Rump, and Suntiger tarantulas. Im not really worried on the price, i just want to know which one would be the most docile/calm and easy to care for.

Thanks :D

irminia are fine.....just the venom has a bit more bite than other NW's.
I would go with P.irminia as it seems you like your arborreals.
Depends what you want out of a spider mate.
ps....irminia are easy......normal temps....spray to keep humidity up......cork log vertically mounted....coir as substrate.....shallow water dish.....job done.
Sit back and enjoy

i want whichever spider of those four is best for a beginner. I dont want a spider that will bite/attack me if i dont "piss it off". Also im hoping for one that will allow me to hold it. P.irminia from what i heard is pretty mean.

you do get ones that can be mean.....you also get mean G.rosea.
Any spider can be nasty and bite you.

The B. vagans would probably be your best bet out of those 4 listed.:)

Really? From what I've heard B. vagans can have serious tempers. and my girl holds to that! Honestly, out of the four I'd reccomend B. boehmei(fireleg) but I've heard even those can be pretty iffy. My personal reccomendation with be B. smithi (Mexican red knee)

Out of curiosity....what spids do you keep and how long have you been in the hobby ?
Just to balance things ....when you answer....I will give you a complete list of ALL my animals and how long I have been keeping them.

Paul, everyone knows the gigantic list of animals you keep.. no need to keep repeating it ;)

To the OP - any tarantula can bite, it's just a matter of finding one that is less likely to. Even within a species that is known for being docile, you will have individuals that don't fit the bill. If you are that worried about temperament, I would evaluate each of the actual Ts at the pet store.. though being kept in a little tub without proper housekeeping is going to bring out the worst in a spider :)

Thing is teal.....I do have one or two posts here so it is not as if I can lie about the animals I keep.....they are all there...pictures and all.
I just miffed when someone I think has just got his first spider, snake, frog or scorpion is slagging me off.
ps....it is not "gigantic" but the Mrs. wants to charge entry into the house to see the zoo

I'm with ya on the Brachypelma smithi Ariel. I was just naming the one that I would choose out of the four listed. Brachypelma vagans can go both ways, attitude wise. I think that the Brachypelma boehmei are a bit to skittish to be handled, just my opinion. Teal has the correct way to decide I think, and that's by going and giving them a 'test drive'.:)

I'd go with the Redrump or the Fireleg. They are very different from your avic and still good for someone with your level of experience.

While it's good to get advice on here, be careful who you listen to and make sure you do your own research to back it up. Not everyone on here knows what they are talking about. P. irminia is one of my favorite spiders. I've kept many and bred them in the past. I would not recommend for you to get one at this point because they are very fast and you have clearly stated that you want something that is not very fast or defensive.

My girl tends to have mood swings, sometimes she'll let me pinch grab her, and she's sat on my knee once when I was doing cage maintance, but lately especially she's tending to be more defensive and bitey.

@Toxic: honestly, I know it wasn't on your list, but I really think B. smithi is the way to go :D they're very very docile, I don't think I've ever gotten a threat from my sub-adult male. Plus they're a classic and gorgeous to boot. :D

best 2nd tatantula

Lots of choices. Almost any Brachypelma fits the bill. Therefore among the 4 choices, Here's another vote for the Fireleg or redrump. Also, among the 4, the Indian Violet, although attractive, being an old world species, has potent venom.
