I just picked up 2...
What do I feed them? I hear they eat a lot of stuff but there are some food Items they shouldn't eat like avocados. What do Texas Giant Millipedes like to eat?

I'm not sure what not to feed them, but mine seem to like carrots and lettuce the most.

A few of mine mostly live in the substrate, but the others like beetle jelly, fish flakes, and Nutro crunchy berry dog treats, I haven't tried the banana flavor.

I use a mixed substrate of wood shavings, dead leaves, and some coco-fiber. They will feed slightly on the substrate but I also feed mine other things. mine especially like apple slices and pear. I'm not sure if they will eat the fish food, but it is worth a try.

Carrots, lettuce (NOT ICEBERG), cucumber, and apples are all good supplemental foods but they really just like leaves and rotting hard woods.

Mine love, love, love butter lettuce, bug burger and sweet potatoes. The bug burger is their absolute favorite and nice to have on hand and ensures plenty of protein and vitamins for them. Their natural nice is pretty much vegetation and decaying wood (they are decomposers after all), so anything that falls under those lines seems to be pretty good.

Make sure you have rotting wood and decayed leaves. That’s #1. Anything else is supplemental. Mine like cucumbers, corn cut from the cob, apples, sweet potato, avocado is also a favorite. Not sure why someone would say it’s bad - I’ve been feeding it for years without a problem.

Will any leaves do it is it ideal to use lettuce?
Leaves should be hardwood - so oak, maple, stuff like that - and already rotting. Lettuce like iceberg has basically no nutritional value so stay away from that.

Not this species of millipede, but mine have also had spinach, rocket and watercress. They like spinach the best and rocket the least across all the species. Romaine and little gem lettuce are popular.

I don't think any leafy greens are actually a problem. It's more that some, like iceberg lettuce, aren't very nutritious. You wouldn't want iceberg to be a regular food.

My O. ornatus eats black walnut leaf litter (easily accessible because I have a black walnut tree - you probably don't), a composite substrate*, rotting oak wood, and occasional carrots and celery when I have them on hand. It and its Spirostreptus sp. tank mate seem to be doing very well, so I think that'd be an adequate diet. Adding some occasional fruit and the rare dead cricket/roach could help provide an even more varied diet.

*Made of 2:1:1:0.5:? - soil, coconut fiber for moisture retention, crushed dried leaves, broken up pieces of wood, and a bit of calcium powder, The top layer is composed of several layers of leaf litter like I mentioned, although a few spots are left devoid of litter to make burrowing a bit easier if the millipedes desire.

I have heard bad things about kale for some species, though I don't recall which. I would avoid kale just in case, but otherwise leafy greens seem to be fine.

I've been wondering, should food like corn and sweet potato be raw or cooked?
I do raw most of the time but cooked works. It does decay faster so be sure to take it out after a few hours. Fish food is good. I sprinkle it on a leaf so I can take out any uneaten portion; it molds fast. Mine also love bug burger and morning wood; both by Repashy.

I feed mushrooms both fresh and dried. The dried is a good vacation food. I also drip pure maple syrup in their substrate.

I’m hungry for pancakes now.
