Newbies and experienced keepers alike, I'm here to ask: Which species is your favorite of all time? Whether that means your favorite to handle, your favorite display species, or just the most rewarding T you've ever kept.

I'm a fairly experienced herp keeper and I've just gotten back into Ts. I'm looking around for some interesting stuff to add to the collection and I would like some input! I'm not intimidated by lots of research about husbandry, nor by a non-handleable species. I just want to know, what's your favorite?

My favorite tarantula of all-time is the Poecilotheria ornata. Even though they are a ESA (Endangered Species Act) species, they are one of the most beautiful tarantulas to me. If had to only have one tarantula left in my collection, it would be my Poecilothera ornata.

Now while my favorite species of all-time is the Poecilotheria ornata. My favorite genus is the Theraphosa genus. They are to me what everyone thinks as what a tarantula should be. A large spider that doesn't seem possible, yet they exist.

Handling Ts is a perfect way to KILL them, they aren’t snakes etc

G. rosea is my favorite. Beautiful coloration, long lived, resilient, and simple husbandry. Different individuals can also have vastly different temperaments, which I love. Just an amazing species in general. There's something about them that's really special to me.

Thank you for answering! I'll definitely be looking into those, especially Poecilothera!

I know they're not, like, hang-out-with-me animals--I just meant, I'm not super concerned about how hard it is to move them for cleaning or move them to a new enclosure. With our collection, we definitely have some animals who are only handled when super necessary!

Sorry, maybe I should've been more specific! ^^"

(Sorry everyone; I just figured out how to multi-qupte! ^^")

This is the species that got me back into Ts! I'm so glad I'm not alone! ^-^

Phormictopus sp. purple

I hope so ..you REALLY should avoid any & all handlig...

That said, I'd be hard-pressed to PICK a species, but I'm rather partial to nearly every species within the Poeciletharia, & Avicularia genus'. Large, showy, spiders ripe with personality.... between the two, & "against" nearly everything else ..you can't go wrong with some shade of "Pink Toe."

My half-pence

Thank you for the reply!
Basically, I intend my Ts to be my "display but no-touchy" pets. I just know that, judging based off of videos I've been watching, the ability to transfer them into new enclosures (esp. when raised from slings) seems to be extremely different between species. This doesn't scare me off! I'll be able to figure it out if I REALLY want a flighty species of T!

I was actually looking into Poeciletharia earlier! I LOVE that striking black and white!

I was also thinking about what kind of pink-toe I want--I know I'd like to have one, but I didn't realize there was such variety!

In my opinion, the Avics are slightly more erratic & unpredictable than the pokies, but you've got a LOT more at stake with a Pokie in play. The general rule is to work up to such hots through experience, but people are going to do what they're going to do, so I like to be forthcoming with my own personal experience. I think at the end of the day I personally lean towards the Avics, & given my experience with them being on the froggy side combined with the fact that they're also often recommended as a "beginner" genus (I understand why, but I'd class them as intermediate, if it were on me), id suggest looking into any of the dozens available of them, or under their "umbrella" (like Caribena, for example)....big, absolutely BEAUTIFUL, & showy as hell, & nothing but a nasty sting & itchy hairs if things go totally south...if you can handle them, in my opinion, you're in good shape to advance.

Your original words and these above are not even remotely similar 🙄

Very good info, thank you! I 'spose maybe I've worded things poorly, but I do intend to get what's considered "easier" species before I advance to anything considered more difficult. Which pink-toe is your favorite?

I apologize, I suppose? Do you not "handle" a creature to clean its enclosure or move it to a new one? I appreciate being cautious about the care of living creatures. Did you have an answer for your favorite T?

Op alot of us do not handle at all myself included, cup your t all the way no hands , it's so dangerous for your t . Poor viper has been here a long time and seen alot of t's hurt because somebody wanted to "hold" them hence his bluntness. He is a very respected member of ab though 😊 and you'll get used to him 😉. He never says anything without a point though so best to pay attention to what he chooses to share .

But bk to the original topic 🙂

How could anyone choose just 1 sp, there are so many gorgeous t's out there it's hard to do.
Like Tentacle I have favourite genus's rather then individual sp.
Nw I have 4 genus I love and will snap up any if I see them.
Arboreal = Psalmopoeus. I love the way they sit waiting for food, when they pop up like a trapdoor spider from their corkbark it makes my heart warm.
Terrestrial = Pamphobeteus, bold and beautiful rocks and the colour changes as they grow ❤ , Thrixopelma, crazy little spoods with lots of attitude, i haven't met one yet that wasn't extremely food driven.
Fossorial =Sericopelma. They are actually classed as terrestrial but all my girls dig excessively even as 7inch + af's so I think of them as fossorials 🤷🏻‍♀️, they burrow, they are bold and are huge as adults and hit food like a truck and the fact they are all stunning helps.

Ow I have only just started with this year but it's chilobrachys all the way for me, they burrow web sit out quite a bit and always put their moults at the burrow entrance for me 😆 . They are by no means a beginner t though, spicy n fast with a big attitude lol but thats why i love them, t with tude is my favourite thing. Don't get me wrong sturdy rock t's are great too but there is something about a more active t I adore 😊

Hope I helped not hindered lol 😆
