Those vents cause cages to dry out fast if your keeping a humidity dependent species but does provide better ventilation. Still I'd recommend making your own holes as you can control exactly how much ventilation/air flow you want yet still have decent humidity.

i tend to like vents, but they dont keep that humidity up, which is a pain when you have a tropical specimen. so i just put holes around the sides and the top to get that cross ventilation.

I dont intend to be rude and apologize if I come off that way, but I doubt very much that there is a "better" way.

You need to take into account the overall size of the enclosure and the size of the vents/mesh being used. On a 12" x 12" lid, keeping the entire thing open with mesh will do a poor job of holding humidity. But what if you use a strip of mesh measuring 1" x 8" ? Maybe two meshed vents each measuring 1" x 3" ? Or .5" x 2" ? Same could be said about holes in regards to there placement, number of holes, and diameter.......

I use holes purely because my soldering iron offers 1/16" and 1/8" tips, and my degree in rocket science wasnt necessary for puncturing acrylic:sarcasm:

Vents to make it look nice; You're own holes for practical use.

I like to use holes because I like to photograph a lot and so I run lines of holes along the corners. This gives me a great unobstructed view and cross ventilation.

what is better for ventilation in acrylic cages, those round vents or holes?
IMO, vents... YET how can you go wrong with holes? They're both quite effective; Its just that one vent is the equivalent to how many holes?

aha I dont know about you, but iv waisted tons of hours drillin' lol.

My .02 here. Holes are free ;) I think there's a little more work going in to vents having to cut a big hole to fit the vent ect... and buying the vents. lol, I'm cheap I guess, but even holes can have a nice look to them. Suzypike has a perfect example!

I tried holes before, and I didn't really like it. I love vents!! So much easier! I cannot for the life of me get holes to look amazing. Mine always look burnt, uneven, and just simply unpleasant. Vents are MUCH MUCH easier for me. All I do is cut out a hole with a razor, get some screening, and hot glue it over the hole. the end product is amazing, I'll try to upload pictures. If you don't want it to dry out your enclosure quickly, make the vent smaller. I have the vents large on my Avics because I rather give them plenty of ventilation and frequent misting.

.. Now time to try to upload..

Yeah these are just some of my vent experiments. Also, what I love about them, is when I mist, I can just mist through the vent, I don't need to open the enclosures. I had my A.avic jump out on my hand back before I used vents

I agree that misting is much much easier with vents. I keep all of my Avic. spiderlings in Jamie's spiderling enclosures. They are absolutely perfect for keeping arboreal spiderlings. I'm sure some of you could make these yourself, but I can't. I will pay the money to buy them though, and they have been well worth it.
