Tliltocatl verdezi, one of my favorite species. I got these two only a few weeks apart last year. The one on the left (Jose Chung, suspect female) was a whole inch smaller back then! One on the right (Queequeg, unsexed) is overdue for a molt but still hungry. Both are around 2.25"

She's so fluffy!! Horchata, T albo

Made my first bulk shipping vial purchase from Thornton. I can either spend ~$200 on 500 vials buying 100 at a time or I can spend ~$200 on 1800 lol. Wonder how long it'll take me to use all of these lol.

Would be nice if you could order them pre-punched with vent holes to your specifications. Might be worth asking them - services and solutions is the way business is heading...

My first tarantula passed away.
It was my t. vagans male (which i bought as a girl, but then turned out to be a male with his last molt), his final molt was in January 2023, so it probably was about time and didn´t come as a surprise, but i´m a bit sad anyway. Nowhere near like when a dog or cat dies, but more than i expected for an animal which doesn´t bond with you or smth like that. I miss that funny skinny guy.
Think i´m gonna bury him in the garden tomorrow and then look forward to buy a new tarantula.

Maybe if I was ordering 10k every 6 months then they might entertain it lol.

With all the lids separated, I'm going to build a jig for my drill press to hold 20-30 at a time. Should go faster than melting the holes with a soldering iron in the lid on the vial (they're shipped lid on for 100 counts) and I won't feel obligated to wash the vials after since their won't be any fumes. That alone should represent a huge time savings.

I also have my shipping vials down to a science and I plan to pre-prep all 1800 to save a lot of time on the backend when I'm packing to ship.

Hard at work, refilling her substrate bowl. Such red! Castor Bean, Tliltocatl vagans
PXL_20240501_113945209.jpg

Moved her out of the sling box, into her first apartment. Less than 24 hours for her to start redecorating/covering up the hand collected red earth from Sedona. Zapote, Bumba horrida

Hadn't seen this one in a month, got a little worried. I tore open a little window by separating part of the turret from the lid. It's still not eating but at least I have proof of life. Jalendu, Haploclastus devamatha
PXL_20240429_174609717.jpg

This made me crave gelato for some reason. This will be home for my Aphonopelma paloma for the next few years, maybe ever. She's about 1.25"

Ktulu, Brachypelma klaasi, nice and fresh

Betazoid -Tliltocatl albopilosus. They grow up so fast. Out wondering where dinner is
PXL_20240429_195410154.jpg

This thing molted. I was told it was a wild caught Aphonopelma from AZ. When I bought it I jokingly said, "Watch it be an LP." About 6 months have gone by, it went from sling to 4," I think it actually is an LP 🤣 It's growing faster than my LP that was about the same size when I bought it.
PXL_20240501_002509373.jpg
I only borrowed this molt, it was obviously fresh and very pliable but wanted to fold over on its self, so naturally I thought to just use my fingers when my tools weren't doing the trick. I've been itching for days 🤣

Rehoused one of my Poecilotheria metallica slings, Fossor. Took all day waiting for it to venture out in its own because it's premolt and I wanted to play it safe. It was a whole new tarantula under red lighting (replaced the overhead bulbs with clear lens red led...did the outside lights too!) Only bad part is that my camera has trouble focusing.
PXL_20240503_022715386.jpg

This little one came in a deli cup, not sure how many ounces, but about 3" in diameter. I'm not fond of the lids. While I was at work it built a circumferential dirt wall/ tunnel, attached to the lid of course. Decided to just rip the band-aid off after realizing the cup was larger than the container I intended to move it into after it molted. It found the cricket I strategically placed at the opposite side of the new enclosure, but it already had my blessing to disappear until it molted.

rehoused my little C. versicolor yesterday and she immadeatly relaxed and began grooming and over night she startet to make her new web.

My 4 yr old daughter helped me setting up the enclosure and during rehousing.
We both really love this spider and it was a calm and wonderful procedure.

Did some rehousings yesterday, more to do today.

0.0.1 Psalmopoeus cambridgei, 2.25" DLS
P5030007.JPG

0.1 Cyriopagopus lividus, 4.5" DLS. Never recovered an intact molt from this one, but a good look at the underside during this rehousing and coloration have me convinced it's a female.
P5030024.JPG
1000021614.jpg

0.1 (suspect) Phormingochilus sp. Sabah red, 3.5" DLS. This one played dead when I was trying to get it in the catch cup, so I just picked up the moss it had grabbed onto and dropped it in the enclosure...

Today in the spider room, I discovered my aphonopelma bosque primavera made a turret after a rehouse. Very unexpected to me for an aphonopelma.

That's actually a bit more interesting than you might be aware. I've never really seen a partially freestanding turret in Aphonopelma spp nor have I kept this particular species, so I'm anxious if anyone else can chime in.

I do know that dwarf Aphonopelma of the Paloma species group can sometimes be differentiated by the pattern in which they dispose of burrow spoil, so this potentially has the chance to be a diagnostic behaviour should any taxonomical work be done with this undescribed species.

I have not seen any information on this aphonopelma sp, so I am very interested in seeing how it behaves as it grows.

Just wish it wasn't as slow growing as these tend to be!

Very good point that it might have just been disposing of the dirt in a way that looks like a turret due to lack of other options. It burrowed in it's old enclosure with no turret built.

Molt mat or sac building?
PXL_20240504_230529196.jpg

PXL_20240505_021200126~2.jpg

Pics are 3 hours apart. She hasn't stopped webbing since I discovered it. She started moving dirt a few days ago.

This girl molted upright last time, in October..and I am surprised to see her put in so much effort. She's the laziest T.

I did pair her but it was several months after she molted and my male was fresh so I wasn't in much of a hurry. Then we had to move. Mostly because we had to move. The new room is dry, we had some cold nights, I had to use a heater. Ive done nothing different feeding/watering wise but everything else changed. So I've considered this cycle a wash. I'd rather her molt than expend the energy on a dud sac :(

If it is an eggsack and she was paired this molt by a fresh male, why would it be a dud? I mean, the odds are against an eggsack with all the movements, but pairing a few months into a molt cycle isn't necessarily a disqualifier if it's under halfway through the cycle overall and that looks like some awfully thick webbing for a molt mat ;) .

What species?

The single attempt and the move, the fact that I've only ever seen one sac and it was a virgin tappie 🤣 This one here is a Tliltocatl verdezi and she's still webbing as of a few minutes ago. I have to go to sleep because I have a 24 hour shift tomorrow but it's going to be difficult if I'm missing the miracle of tarantula birth next door
PXL_20240505_054601791.jpg

Edit it's 420 am, so you know where your tarantulas are???? Just wanted to update, she's still going at it. She does look like she's lost some weight overnight. If there are eggs she has laid them and shes working on covering them up still. The base of the webbing looks heavier. Maybe I'm coming home to a sac tomorrow!

That's no molt mat...

On a similar, but more frustrating, topic: I got a male for my C. versicolor female from @fcat at the end of January. I held off pairing because my girl was well into her molt cycle and I figured the male would be good until she molted. About 3 months later and my female had finally webbed herself away so I assumed a molt was imminent. Webbing continued to thicken and last night seemed to be the night for a molt. I excitedly looked in on her this morning to find this:
1000021710.jpg

Dammit! I wanted to bang my head against the wall. :banghead: Seems like I made a bad decision to wait to pair them. Anyway, I'll pull the sac, feed her up and hopefully get a molt in the next couple months, then try pairing. The male is still in great shape, so I think I've got time.

On a more positive breeding note, my paired Phormingochilus everetti female is eating like a horse - she's greedily taken down 8 adult male Dubia and one adult female Dubia in the last 3.5 weeks, and hasn't shown any signs of letting up. I'm optimistic that things will work out there.

I rehoused my confirmed male Phormingochilus sp. Sabah red yesterday, and he behaved more like I'd expected - lots of bolting, threat posing, and biting the paint brush. He's still gorgeous, though...

1000021732.jpg

He offered to give me a hug for providing his nice, new home:
1000021735.jpg

I put a chunk of webbing from his old enclosure in the new one, and as soon as he found it he clinged on and settled down - he stayed like this for several hours:
