WHY are pet stores soooo stupid ?? The pet store is now trying to sell a (supposedly male) rose hair as a Zebra Stripe Knee. She says to me " Rook (oops), see its different from Rose Hair, it has stripes on its knees" Im thinking, "Um, they both have stripes on their knees !! THEY look exactly the same !!"

So I guess these idiost are trying to sell a rose hair as a striped knee to get more money, unless they are genuinely THAT stupid....:( How sad.....by the way, they want the stripe knee for 59.99 $

Hmm, I paid 12 bucks for my Striped Knee. The price of $59 is a laugh.

Those petshops never stop amazing you with their stupidity/greedyness (is that a word??). The place I used to buy crickets sold anything from dogs to reptiles and spiders, which were all in the containers they came in (they can't stretch their legs, no water etc.) Some of them had been there for months. This is the reason I don't come there anymore, I now go to a specialist reptile/arachnid shop that has decent enclosures.

Its City Central Pets I think, in Surrey Place Mall.

Not to speak poorly of the owners, they are chinese, so if you know if youve dealt with them before

Yeah, I went to a PetSmart today just for the heck of it, o see if it was really as bad as everyone says it is... well, it pretty much is. THey have exactly ONE standard enclosure setup for herps... dry coconut bark, open screen lid, and an extremely hot light sitting right on top of the lid. THere was an entire tank of Green Tree Frogs dead and literally mummifying under the light... the species chart right under the tank said "High Humidty", and they had them in about the most NON-humid enclosure possible, barring using sand...

I just got done talking with the Store Manager about what I saw today, and she asked me if I thought it was because maybe they weren't using the right lightbulb?!? I said, "no, look... ANY direct light wth completely open caging is going to result in severe, rapid dessication (I don't think she even knew what the word meant)... you would do better to put about three more water bowls in there - by the way, the only bowl IN there was bone-dry, - close off 75-80% of the screen top, and use and under- or side-tank heater instead of a light. Frogs don't need a 100deg basking spot like lizards..."

The thanked me and said she'd go look at it right away... I'm not necessarily a frog person per se, but I don't enjoy seeing animals baked to death intentionally.

I was in two different shops this week that had , and most likely still have two species living together in the same cage. Petco had or has a G. rosea with a A. avicularia. And a mom and pop shop have a A. chalcodes with a male A. seemanni.
I told both that this is a bad idea. The manager at Petco said " I'll have to look into it". and mom and pop wouldn't touch them, so I moved the Zeb for them. If these pet shop people were a little smarter, they would be morons.

I HATE PETSTORES LIKE THAT !!! What is up with the maltreatment of their animals ?? (I dont know if thats a word, but its fitting and it aughta be !) Why dont these idiot pet stores LEARN more about the species and care for them better and not put them in situations that may lead to death (like two spider species, same cage, and baked frogs) ? ITS SICK, and frankly, I think that the SPCA should hear about the way some of these pets are treated ! I have known SOME good pet stores, but some TERRIBLE ones to. If we are going to continue to exploit animals, why cant we do it NICELY ???

GAD ! IM SO MAD !

Yea its to much.
I offered the mom & pop shop $10.00 for the male Zebra, I told- em he wasn't long for this world , And that if he got back in with the Rosea again she'll surely kill him. And they said, No we need the asking price of $20.00 for him.
They were in one of those long, wide 4" deep cages with a divider in it. You know if he got over the divider once he'll do it again.
Whats a spider lover to do?

I don't mean to interject a little devil's advocacy into your righteous wrath, but one of the things we as tarantula lovers need to keep in mind is that in the eyes of the owners, the average customer, and particularly the law, it is just a bug. A big cool bug, but just a bug no matter how you slice it. Dry'em out, squishem, pull their legs off on national television, they're not doing anything the SPCA or any other organisation is going to do anything about unless you happen to live in a locality with stricter than usual laws.

So, educate where you can if you think the owners are simply ignorant, or just don't support the store with your business, but all this 'something ought to be done' is misplaced energy.

re

yeah its pretty anoyying when you go to a petshop and they don't know what there doing, and when you ask a question they either know nothing, or a little, or they act all arrogant like they know what their doin, or rudly won't speak to you about it, when you can plainly see they don't know what there doin, i went to a shop in marquette michigan that was terrible, they had a 2foot savvanah monitor in a 20 gallon tank and they wanted 300 for it!!! a baby red tail boa was like 200, frickin outrageous i tell ya, and god forbid they got something rare or slightly hard to find thn you would be bankrupt if ya bought it, oh yeah they had a whites treefrog for like 100 too, sickening, and its not like they were real healthy either most of the reps had thermal burns, at one time i went to buy a ball python they wanted 150 for normal ball babies, and most of them looked malnourshed as did there iquanas which the had cramed into a small 20 0r 30 with like 20 in there, awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww, i can just keep bickering but whats the use, there morons up there

I have a feeling that sometimes in a pet store tanks and dwellers get switched around either from showing or cleaning and are mis labled. I went thru that with my saltwater fish and my snakes. I paid half the price for this one snake that was miss marked. They wanted to charge me twice the price. I told them there snakes were labled wrong. Petstores also change names or make up names that sound cooler. Thats why I always try to get the scientific name.

Maybe it's the fact that I'm older, maybe it's just that I'm more cynical about the human race, but when I live in a society which thinks the best thing to be done for drug addicts is to incarcerate them, that the only person who can't have a say in how *your* land is used is *you*, and has politicians arguing the government has a right to 40% of your property simply because you died, I really think there are more important things to get riled up about than whether a pet store knows what they're doing.

I vote with my wallet - if they don't seem to have any clue about how to take care of the animals, I don't shop there if I've got a choice. It's the most direct act I can take that might possibly make a difference.

What we need is ethical people, not more bullshit gov't enforced 'standards'. All the standards in the world don't make any difference when the store is staffed by teenagers who don't know a thing and the manager is just trying to make it through the day to feed his kids.

There is a wide gulf between what 'ought to happen' and what 'is going to happen'. I try not to get involved in the former issues because if I did I'd be even angrier 24/7 at the world than I already am ;)

I fully agree with everything Code Monkey has said so far in this post. I mostly agree with what he said about not spending money in that store anymore and that the SPCA wouldnt even blink or care when told of the conditions of the bugs in the store. Just stop shopping at that store and tell other people abou thow bad it is. I am in Surrey sometimes so I wont go there, except maybe to yell at the store owners for their stupidity.

I know its unlikely that the SPCA would care, but you know, if a health inspecter makes suprize visits to a resturaunt (and to me serving food once !!) then why the hell cant the SPCA make annonomous visits to pet stores to make sure there is a standard of care ?
This isnt something that is consuming my energy or making me mad (as you might believe Code) I just think that there should be some sort of standard in pet stores care of ALL its animals.

Not all the pet stores in my area are bad in there care of animals. One pet store near my house does a good job of all its pets...it doesnt have cats or dogs becuase, unlike the previous owners it realizes that there isnt the room,...they just have rodents, rabbits, fish...I think they neeed to keep their bettas heathier,...and walmart too.

Its just City Central Pets that is a bad pet store !!

There is a petstore just off of highway 1 in Chilliwack across the road from the Superstore there. THey sell so many different species of tarantula and their prices are brilliant. You should go there.
