I think my auratus sling has been my most defensive phormic sling which is odd.
if this auratus sling is a jerk I am blaming you lmao

Thanks for the run down on your experience with them. I do plan to offer this one some more substrate to burrow if he wants to. That cancerides I had back in the day, I don't think I had offered that much to it. I think I had a half clay pot or cork bark for a hide. Can't remember exactly though.

You should be good. All phormics will act skittish when you open the lid. Not crazy do laps around the cage, but act similarly to how a person does when a friend makes us jump lol

My phormic slings have stayed out in the open for the most part. I feel like they are more opportunistic than excavate themselves (cancerides being the exception) but if you give them a nice hide where they can retreat, that would be a good idea. Mine would never fully go in when startled but they would put their front legs in (almost like an insurance policy for them). My atrichromatus utilizes his burrow ALOT, so he's the oddball of the genus.

More substrate is never a bad idea imo. You have more ability to regulate the moisture that way without making the environment stagnant as well.

Let me know how your sling is doing and if you have any questions feel free. Great tarantulas though and very entertaining.

Thanks! I think the Namaquensis is becoming my favorite Harpactira sp. Just really beautiful even as slings and like their cousin (H pulchripes) I see them everyday.
