so you are telling me that this one doesn't look exactly like the one in this thread?
Those are juvenile H. maculata and do not look exactly like their adult counterparts..

H.maculata ad fem so you can see the difference, maculata just look alot like calceatum when thier young easy mistake, but calceatum have a black underside and maculata have a gray underside. Unless they mature into males then they look a lot like calceatum.

Its easier to compare maculata to calceatum ... Heteroscodra maculata has larger leg 4, especially the Patella ... I dont think we can ID by the coloration, especially not on picture.

(im not talking of the underside here, but the coloration of spider itself)

this always comes up for discussion...all you have to do is flip it over and see if the underside is tan or jet black....tan=h mac and black=stromat...

....as stated previously. i didnt catch that right away.

that's not a S. calceatum... that's a Heteroscodra maculata...
Hooray for Kodak Taxonomy lol!;P IMO the 2 species are easily discernable. The spider posted by the original poster in this thread is undoubtedly an S. calceatum.

Do you have permission to post those photos? If not they should be linked to, otherwise it is a copywrite violation.:)

S. calceatum's scopulate pads on the metatarsi are quite a bit thicker than H. maculata's, while the pads on the tarsi are about the same size. Also, leg IV on S. calceatum is not as thick as H. maculata's. The abdominal patterns are different as well. The easiest way to tell them apart is ventrally though. S. calceatum is black underneath while H. maculata is tan.

Paired these up wendsday night. It went well, saw at least 10 insertions and both were really receptive. Sorry for the picture quality, I decided to keep the enclosure doors shut for this one.:D
