Somebody should set up an experiment with these to see how good their free fall floating ability is. I think it would be pretty interesting. Nice pics and spiders by the way. :)

What a nice picture of your stromatopelma! I had no idea they were this pretty when they are grown. I have a really nice little sling from Todd Gearheart that I love, but he is still pretty small and dark grey. This species looks about as pretty as my P rufilata! Thanks for posting the picture.

that's not a S. calceatum... that's a Heteroscodra maculata...

i agree...the abdomen on the h maculata has many more white dots but they are more similar looking that i previously thought.

Yeah, they are quite similar looking, but S. calceatum is more greenish in color. When H. maculata is in premolt, or a mature male, they do darken, but more brown-grayish.

<edit> Found an easy way to distinguish the two. S. calceatum's scopulate pads on the metatarsi look quite a bit thicker than H. maculata's, while the pads on the tarsi look about the same size. I would say the spider in your picture is indeed S. calceatum.

Yes exactly, their leg 4 and especially the patella region are larger
