Been years since I had a h mac.. what’s the big difference in these two ? I didn’t buy the enclosures as it seeemed overpriced . I can look up care sheets but I’d rather ask for info here.
I’ve had lots of pokies zero s cal.
Tips feeding it dubia ? Or should I pre kill mealworms?
I’ll wait til a molt to confirm gender I’m not good enough at ventral to confirm anything. For $50 was a good deal .
Any suggestions for housing?

Care is very, very similar to H. maculata. Arboreal enclosure with a large piece of vertically oriented cork bark and some foliage towards the top to help provide anchor points for webbing. They are very heavy webbers! They're also extremely fast and will bolt if startled. Some people say that their specimens are very defensive. My female is very, very skittish but I've never seen defensiveness or even a threat posture from her. But each animal is different so be prepared. For safety I use long tongs and alligator forceps to do all of my maintenance. I think for this species it's also a good idea to house them in an adult enclosure once they're juveniles. Typically they're fantastic hunters with big appetites so they won't have trouble finding prey. It also cuts down on the number of rehousings which is good from a safety standpoint and reduces stress for them. They tend to be very skittish spiders that bolt at the slightest disturbance. Don't be surprised if you rarely see yours, especially when it's small. Very reclusive and strictly nocturnal. When you do see them though, it's a real treat. They're beautiful tarantulas.

It’s a faster, spicier species according to Seasoned OW breeders I know. Will move like lightning!
Proceed with caution

It it better too keep it in a small kritter keeper or 32oz arboreal style deli cup / plastic container . I might have to go to target and buy an arboreal style container . I was right to pass on that expensive zilla enclosures right ? Or should I order an enclosure online . Any suggestions?? All my arboreal containers either got tossed by my mom or buried in the garage. Easily $50+ in pretzel jars missing … I could buy a pretzel jar but they are getting expensive.

Definitely right to pass on the enclosure, you could get an exo terra for that money.

Maybe something like this cereal container, not sure who I'm putting in it yet. Not sure what I paid either.

You cannot deal with some of the hair kicking nw but goes and buys this? And then proceeds to ask about enclosures after the fact.
You are a mess my guy .

You are the last person who should care for this awesome specie of tarantula. Your husbandry is garbage to boot. You are seriously a train wreck. There care is no different than the H.mac. you have been on here for a decade if not longer and you don't know this already.

Well,I don’t know your financial situation, but if I picked up a S.cal,I would have sprung for the enclosure also.Simply for the sake of getting used to the animal. And not going thru the rehousing adventures with a S.cal.
Best of luck with it.Not a T you want lose and pissed off.

Bro do not underestimate the speed and unpredictability of this species. I can't emphasize that enough. Never take anything for granted, NEVER get complacent. I don't care what anyone else has to say about them, this is not a species to trifle with.

Edit (looks male-ish to me 😒)

I looked at pictures of the ventral side, since mine are slings and I never got to see them (only legs). As far as I seem to understand, str calc have a black ventral side and h macs are light colored. I hope its true, I don't know how it is with the genders, but if anyone keeps adults, and got an opportunity to see their ventral side, I would be happy to read your experience.

They are extremely fast...do not underestimate them. Just like Heteroscodra maculatum, do all maintenance with long tongs, and I recommend never begin feeding or maintenance without knowing where it is before opening the enclosure to prevent unwanted escapes. Care is simple, and the same. But treat it just like every other species with the utmost care and respect that they can bolt in a heartbeat.

I think im Getting a slow species next time it’s only a matter of time before it escapes and is loose running around . I couldn’t even keep pokies in their enclosures. Illl treat it like a venomous dangerous animal and try and not let
It get away . If it escapes it won’t survive my dry basement .
Maybe I should set some traps ahead of time??? Or something… dw i don’t plan on getting anymore fast species this was a mistake.

I hate to say it, but if that's the case I'd be extremely careful with this spider and possibly consider rehoming it for safety reasons. I'm not trying to be insulting so please don't take it personally. This is not a spider that you want to have running around loose in your home.

been smooth sailing so far haven’t even had a threat pose I leave it alone.
I’ll probably have to feed it a medium dubia nymph I don’t think this spider is big enough for a mature male dubia but who knows? It’s in a temporary tank. I fed it a mealworm pupae.

They're arboreals. Not sure your setup is looking too hot for this species.

I just have to buy corkbark I can get a proper cage for it although the kritter keeper may work for a few molts. I was going to buy a clear cerail container for it. This is a temporary tank.
Someone tossed all my pretzel jars and arboreal plastic containers.
