instead of telling me to give up, why dun u guys tell me how/what should i actually do to keep it and/or make it happy and still keep myself safe .. ?
There are a couple of things you should consider before even thinking of keeping the snake.
1. Can you properly house the snake when its an adult (can be 20'+)?
2. Can you afford to supply the proper prey items (e.g pigs, rabbits, etc)?
3. Do you have someone who is willing to help you service the snake's enclosure to ensure the snake's safety and your own?
4.Are you committed to owning a snake that becomes large and has a life span that can pass the 10yr mark?

If you answered no to at least one of these questions then a retic is not the snake for you. I'd take everyone's advice and find someone who can properly care for the little guy.

Your lack of knowledge and inexperience with pythons is the reason why we can't tell you how to keep it. We would be doing you and the snake a disservice if we did.
Mike

BTW did you not check out the link I posted about the retic at the Bronx zoo. Those are nine people holding that snake!

i've talk to a friend who's working in a local zoo.. he's agreed to take that snake i have .. i told him i would bring it there anytime.

i do have a room specially for my pets (tarantula's etc .. ) mice is available here fo it to consume and yeah i got it a 20 gallon tank with a secured lid, so i think i will keep it for a few days to observe it or maybe to get a little experience before i give it up to the zoo.. what do u guys think .. ?

Hi Randy, I've got three large Reticulated Pythons, and they become much more than a pet, they become a small job to keep.
They are unpredictable, and interaction with them is limited. Once they start getting past the 12' mark, they become more than just a casual pet.

Much of the year my two males have to be housed separate too, because they will fight, and can hurt each other.

I have a 17' female (normal), a 17' male (tiger), and a 19' male (normal)....I'm itching to get an albino baby soon :)

These are fantastic snakes, but they are alot of work, and can be very dangerous. I have been on the bad end of a Retic, and if you don't keep your wits about you when dealing with them, they can ultimately overpower you.

They are definately a species I'd not recomend for a beginner.

Good decision on letting the zoo take it!

These are my normals...

Just a bit of advice, I'd chuck the little water bowl. They like water, and need to soak more than most people let them. Anacondas like to soak for long periods, but Retics like to soak for short sessions usually 30 mins at a time, but often, as long as the water temp is good.

I'd get a larger plastic container, which would allow the snake to submerge entirely under the water.

Great pic of the munching!

actually its a deep delicup.. its enough for it to totally submerge. i bury the whole delicup under the sand .. so it looks shallow.. maybe u were referring to the width of that water dish ?

What does it mean when a snake suddenly breathes very fast? sort of like a dog panting.. ? does it mean its stressed? tired?? or they breathe whatever way they like ???? :? :?

each time i go downstairs in the middle of the night and look at this rectic with a torch, it starts breathing hard..

Hmm I dont post here often but i read a lot.

Imagine the situation. You are a nocturnal animal and are lying there in the dark minding your own business when all of a sudden some plonker walks up and thrusts the brightest light you ever did see in your face. How would you feel if it was daytime and all of a sudden the lights went out and you were thrown into darkness.

Nuff said.

Its a threat display meaning "get the hell out of my reach or i bite"..
Its just the same as a vipers hissing or a rattlesnakes rattling. Next step is a powerful bite. This is basic knowledge about snakes. Buy a book.

I am glad the zoo would take it.

Please keep in mind that zoos usually will not take snakes, for several reasons, one being lack of room.

And please, do not release exotic pets into the wild, it's a horrible thing to do. You can seriously damage the environment that way, and depending on the species, you're just sending it off to die.

Huffing and puffing is not a threat display as most ambush predators huff and puff before a strike. This is to increase the heart rate to prepare itself for a feeding strike or defensive strike/run. Ever seen a gabby before it strikes? Hissing on the other hand is a defensive mechanism. :)

I never heard that they need to pump them self up before striking. My snakes surely dont need it, some dont even rattle before striking.
To first make a prey aware of its prescence by huffing and puffing, nah. They huff & puff if they feel threatened for ex a human. I do think its a audible threat display just like hissing or rubbing the scales.
Yes I seen a gabon strike, and I also heard and seen it inflates itself heavily with air. If that is not a sign of threat I dont know what is ;-)
Let me know if you got articles somewhere that backs your theory up.

Just dont put your ear close to them ;-)
Size does matter..when it comes to rattle atleast. When my atrox male starts Im afraid the neighbor will start pounding on the wall...

don't plan to Lelle! they may be small, but their feisty as hell!

that is the reason i don't have atrox..... that and the fact i don't have the space to house them.

Are they adults? I could hear my barbouri but it was more a buzz then a classic rattling.
Same with juvenile rattlers, they just go for it but all is coming out are a buzz :)
