I want to keep a tarantula or two in addition to my growing centipede collection, but the problem is that spiders are a no-go as I live with people who have arachnophobia. No one really looks in the cabinet, and I have a few white-plastic large ice cream tubs in which I could quite happily keep a smaller sized T without anyone ever finding out :alien:alien:alien

The tub is translucent (really cloudy white) so you can't see in but light passes through. I'd say it's 18x12x12cm (or 7x5x5") and I have flatter ones too.

So I'd like to know what mini-tarantulas are out there that you recommend.

I used to keep a Cyclosternum fasciatum back in the day that was small, so think this is an option. My Ceratogyrus cornatus was also pretty damn small but it was a male.

Happy with old world as well as new.

Cyriocosmus sp and Hapalopus sp columbia are great dwarves with good color, webbing, and appetite. They're quite the little speed demons but it sounds like you can manage that. Dolichothele diamantinensis are also another good dwarf option, but they can be defensive as well, depends specimen to specimen.

There's also Euthalus sp red if you're looking for something a little more tame, downside being they tend to be very slow growing if you're looking at slings.

I would go for something fossorial. Odds are your roommates won't ever see it.

I.mira would be your best option for a smaller species, attractive with some interesting behavior. They make trapdoors and seldom emerge from their burrows unless there is food.

Davus pentaloris = C. Fasicatum.
Mixup with the original import.

Dolichothele, Cyriocosmus, Neoholothele, Heterothele, Ami, of the top of my head.

Yeah, they were mislabeled from the start. D.pentaloris is what we have in the hobby.

The true D.fasciatus is actually an entirely different species, not yet available to us. They aren't one in the same. I wish Kezy still had those pics he showed me, you can see the distinct differences between both species. Most notably the carapace coloration.

Anyone curious can google image it.

I'd get a Heterothele gabonensis if you can find one:D They only get about 2" and are very pretty.

E. Sp. red:

-not very big

-excellent species that would be great for converting arachnophobes

-great first tarantula

-not the best eaters, but still way better than G. porteri/rosea

-I always recommend this species to everybody

I love Cyriocosmus! The little "heart" on their butts is really cute. (Yeah, that is such a girly thing to say!) But seriously, I do use my spiders in the classroom, and the little heart-shaped marking plus the small size helps to make them appealing to some of the more arachnophobic kids. I've seen kids go very quickly from "Ew! I hate spiders!" to "Awww! She's so cute!" - which then opens them up to an appreciation of other bugs and spiders as well.
