Our "Ivana" the double rex does the same thing! She looks like the world's cutest chemo patient. {D

She just delivered her first (and last!) litter too, btw! We've counted 12-15 rittens in there...but we don't want to disturb them until they're a little bigger. She just had them on the 1st.
Congrats on the litter! Its ok to handle the babies right away if the mom will let you. Its important if you want to socialize them to handle them every day for at least a half hour. It gives mom a break and it has the side benefit of the mom licking them extra when you put them back in with her. Psychology researchers have studied rats from mothers who were high lickers vs. low lickers and the high lickers' babies were smarter, friendlier, and more confident. ;)

patch work rats i shutter at the site but thats actually cool looking. as far as handeling them, yes indeed, mine are fuzzies and are handeled everyday, it also makes them easier to sell when they are not skitterish. Anyone breed hairless? i have a male and all his litters to reg or hairless females have produce 99% males when they are hairless babies. Weird, what's up with that?? now my hairless bred to a drk brn female.

Anyone here who keeps (LIVE) rats in the same room as snakes, and what do the snakes have to say about the smell of the rats?

I used to, It seemed they were alittle more pissy, but there was not that much dif. But then again allot of my snakes were non-handled Pituophis lol

I'm not actually a breeder, so I don't know about your hairless boy problem. :? I do know that true hairless (not double rex) females often are sterile and if they do produce a litter, they tend to have problems lactating. I just did a little bit of research, and there are several different groups of genes which can cause hairlessness in rats. Perhaps the hairless genes you are working with are mainly located on the male chromosome? :?

CU, my snakes are upstairs and the rats are downstairs. I imagine as long as hands are washed, and shirts changed if necessary, there should be no issues.

Double Rexes are so interesting looking. The patterns of hair after "molts" is always changing. Someday, I would like some hairless or "mock" hairless, but for now, I have a bunch of 4-7 month old boys.

I figured something like that. I have so little space I'll just have to go on dreaming about rats for a while I guess.

Did the rats ever react to the snakes in case there was any "world overlap"?

Not really. They are fairly common in the fancy if you go to a rat show. What you probably mean the Xtreme patchwork ratties who look like zebras...

Supposedly, there was a feeder-breeder awhile ago selling them for $100 each at herp shows.
That's them. Mine aren't quite that zebra-like. I've never been to a rat show...I should probably check them out though. More stuff to spend money on, I suppose...;)

The fur falls out and grows back in a different pattern every couple weeks. :)

Oh they are lovely! Their hair patterns are so distinct! I'll have to ask someone in my club what makes the hair like that. I have a double rex who has a migrating hair pattern, but the patterns are nowhere near as distinct as yours!

BTW, it looks like you are keeping them on pine shavings. Pine and cedar can cause respiratory problems. A paper litter like Yesterday's News works better. You can also do fleece lined cages and litterbox train them. That's what I do! Saves $$ on litter. ;P They also love hammocks, newspaper to shred, tubes and tunnels, and wheels. Here is a homemade cage I'd love to make someday:

Here's a video of one of my rats using her litterbox, right after I put them in the new Martens 695 I got. Sorry it's kinda bad, I just figured out my camera could make short videos :

Now if I can just get some of my Ts to not use their water dish as a potty. ;)

Here's Nicodemus, who passed last spring. He was an old man.

This is Nibbler, who is actually Nico's "son" from a litter I bred with a friend. He refuses any cagemates. So he's my loner.
