I definitley want a hairless or double rex! Are mice as affectionate/sociable as rats?

i don't tame my mine, i have all feeders but enjoy the rats more than the mice, mice can make good pets, but you find a smart rat and it's on. i had one that came to it's name it was cool. Smart rats get to live longer lol

Awesome pics...they make me feel all warm and fuzzy. :D Rats rock as pets; smart as a dog and affectionate as a cat!

This is our girl "Ivana" Double Rex semi hairless Dumbo.
She's going to have her first litter this week. It was a total accident - but no matter; we'll just have more of them to love for a short while. All the babies will be weaned and sold as pets. :) If they're as sweet natured as their mother - then there will be some very lucky folks around here. Ivana even naps with us!

Oh yeah, buddy! Ivana hops up and down (literally), and bruxing her little brains out when we wake up in the morning..she wants O.U.T.! She just isn't happy unless she's on someone's shoulder or in their shirt..lol! Our daughter Sarah is her chosen "Alpha" and the two of them are inseparable. We even take Ivana in our hoodies to the grocery store...sssshhh! She goes everywhere with us. ;)
She even cuddles up for a nap on the couch with our Pit, Betty Rumble. (Betty thinks everything small is her "baby") Watching those two groom each other is heartwarming..but alarming to new guests...lmao! {D

aw, so sweet!

Here's a pic of my last pair of ratties. They've both passed on since, way too young...

Watson is the silly upside down one. He was my favorite ratty ever. Such a cute, silly little monkey. He had an anurism or something after I had him for about two months, and didn't make it much longer. I gave his brother to my sister to be a breeder, because I didn't want him to be alone, and didn't want to get any more ratties.

I love ratties, but I don't have much luck with keeping them alive, it seems, so I won't be getting any more for awhile.

thanks for sharing these pics, everyone! So much fun!

Cute rats. I have one that looks almost like Ice Cream :} I currently have 3 of them. The all brown one is named Brownie. The other two don't have names yet.

The brown and white one is the one that loves being handled the most. The other two will run up to my hand and place their front legs on it and sniff but if i try to pick them up and pet them they run away. They have been getting a lot better though as I spend more time with them. {D

*Edit* Kind of silly but I just noticed you can barely see the mouse trap game in the second picture >.<

This is Fast Eddie..(R.I.P)..he lived past 6 years old. No kiddin'. His vet will vouch for him.
He was rescued from a pet store; out of a feeder tank. He turned out to be the sweetest thing on 4 legs..xoxoxox
He was reliably friendly and patient with even the smallest of kind children. He even shared his fruit treats and crackers. {D This picture was taken 2 weeks before he passed away of old age..right after his afternoon snack.

*those are grapes in the background - shared by his human toddler friend. They shared a drink of water, too...{D
His cage was never kept closed up like in the pic; but for his sake - at his advanced age; we thought it best when the innocent and loving toddler wanted to hold him endlessly. :)

** please don't blast me about his nails. I already know they were in terrible shape.
We (the vet and I) decided that it wasn't worth putting him through the trauma when we took him in for a trim....and then he lived waaaaay longer than we expected. Thank goodness. :)

Wow, 6 years? The place I adopted the brown and white one from said rats lifespan is about a year or so.

I rescued the all brown one from being a feeder and the gray and white one I picked up from xhexdx ;P

Since I don't have pics of my previous ratties, I figured I'd still share all their stories.
I've had seven rats, although no more than three at once. I first adopted Betty and Veronica from petco, they were owner surrenders. Betty was a hairless girl with huge mammary tumors. Ronnie was a big agouti girl, she weighed 1 lb at her first vet visit- she had mites and a RI. Then I adopted Judy Garland and Ruby Slippers, double rex hairless girls, because I knew that Betty didn't have much time left, and wanted Ronnie to have company. That didn't go over so well, they kept beating her up, so Ronnie moved in with my SIL's ratties. My two girls faded away from some mysterious illness- it came on so quickly that I didn't get the chance to take them to the vet. One day they were fine, the next, they were skin and bones.
Later, my sister was given four bad boy ratties as feeders (they were really aggressive). I totally fell in love with one of them after he managed to escape from his cage, and made me chase him around my sister's house. He was just doing it to challenge me, I knew it. He was really smart. I named him Sherlock, and then bought Watson and Mycroft with the hopes of eventually getting them to be buddies. After I brought him home, he would escape from his cage at night, and just sit on top of it, chewing the bars until I woke up and put him back. Each time I tried to fix it so he couldn't get out, he outsmarted me until I moved him into a bigger cage. Then he developed some sort of lump in his throat, I want to say it was a thyroid tumor, and didn't make it. Then Watson, my little monkey, developed that brain thing.
I'd do it all over in a heartbeat, but my mom has hated rodents since the beginning, and is adamant that I don't bring them home anymore. And with all of my reptiles, I don't have space for a cage in my room. When I get a place of my own, I might adopt a pair of boy ratties (I love big boys! So cuddly and lazy!) to spoil. But that's going to be a long way off...
