Questions about Tarantulas and their relationship with cleanup crew (i.e. Isopods)

Hey all, gonna try and keep this short and sweet.

I've been looking into introducing cleanup crews to some of my Tarantula enclosures once my tropical species get a bit larger, but I haven't been able to find anyone who sells Isopods or Springtails around here. No luck online either, so far.

I'm curious about how T's react to having Isopods introduced to their enclosure - will they try to eat them? Are they too small for the Ts to bother with? Or do they maintain a symbiotic relationship similar to that which some wild Ts will have with frogs?

The reason I ask is, while I cannot find anyone selling Isopods, my garden is absolutely crawling with them. In some parts of my flower bed, it looks like there's more Isopods than soil. We've never used any form of pesticide in the time we've lived here (will be 11 years in June), but we have used organic compost and my S.O. insists on using Miracle Grow (much to my aggravation). I don't know what sort of pesticides or fertilizers the former tenants might have used though.

I understand that offering WC prey items to Ts is potentially asking for trouble, but do you think introducing WC cleanup crew would be safe?

(P.S. I hope I've put this in the right section - I didn't want to put it in the "Other Inverts" forum because I'm wanting to know specifically how T's react to them. If this is seen as a problem though, I have no issue with this thread being moved. Thanks to everyone for taking the time to read. :) )

I have isopods in several of my tanks. I've never noticed any of the spiders paying them any attention, bit baby Emperor scorpions will sure wreak havoc on a population. I use dwarf whites and a couple of the Porcellus (sp?) genus.
If you Google 'isopods for sale', a whole slew of sites come up. Also, check the classifieds on this site. I've seen them advertised there, too.
If you use wild caught, recommendation is to keep a colony for awhile, let them multiply and use the offspring in your tanks.

I'm sorry, I should have specified that I'm from Canada. I have found sites that offer them, but none that ship outside of the US. :(

Thanks for the tip on the WC Isopods though, I appreciate it. :) I'll wrangle a small population from my garden and raise them on organic mulch for a while - by the time I need them, they should be ready to go.

That's funny Phobe, I tried them in several enclosures and they all were munched quickly. I think one lasted a night with the P. nigricolor. I loved the idea, but couldn't make it work for me.

This is where I ordered my Trichorhina tomentosa: http://www.roachcrossing.com/category/for-sale/non-roach/clean-up/

The key is to get isopods small enough that the spider won't care. I've got T. tomentosa in with my Gromphadorhina oblongonota. They're tiny, about the size of a pinhead cricket, and don't really hang out on the surface. They'd make a good meal for a half inch sling but nothing larger.

I've had two species in with my E murinus for a few years now. I don't see them frequently, but I did see a few working on a bolus last week. I seeded my T stirmi tank with them. I recently broke down one of my P imperator tanks and there were scads of the dwarf whites (T tomentosa) everywhere. Even the scorplings leave those alone. Just not big enough to be considered food, I guess.

I bought a few from AbraxasComplex a few years ago. You can always ask him if he still has some for sale or if he knows where to get some.

http://www.bugsincyberspace.com/ usually sells a nice variety of "clean up crews" tropic whites are the ones im using, they are too small for most adult tarantulas to consider them as viable food source, but otherwise springtails are also really good.
