Pink-Toe Tarantula mostly on the ground

Lately I’ve noticed my pink toe being on the ground and webbing up it’s hide rather than being high. It also moved the substrate from under the hide and put it on the webs. This is my first tarantula, which I got last week, so maybe it’s nothing but since it is an Arboreal tarantula I’m thinking I might have done something wrong to its environment. I don’t mist it’s enclosure because I keep a water dish in there and keep the temperature the same as I keep it in my room, so overall my question is if this is normal behavior?

Ah I see I figured there was something wrong with the set up. Thank you for the fast and straightforward reply, I’ll try to fix it up and educate myself more on its care. I do have an additional question, while I educate myself and buy the things needed, is it’s behavior harmful right now in anyway?

How long is that cork bark? Leaning it up against the side of the tank so it's taller and right near the bit of leaf cover may help. You basically want a fake tree for them to make a home in... Bark leaning against the side at least at a 45 degree angle and lots of leaves in the top half of the tank for it to connect its webs to.

The cork bark is about 5 inches long, I just bought 3 pieces of long driftwood and some better, more realistic leaves for the t. Hopefully that will help make it more homey for it. I’ll definitely try what you suggested with the cork bark once it gets use to the driftwood because I don’t want to disturb what it’s making since it’s all covered with webs. Thank you for the help and for the thread on how to care for it :)

Replace that mesh top, also.

I would go ahead and remove the spider and redecorate as soon as you have all the items. The tarantula is stressed and will settle in faster to proper enclosure, rather than new stressors every so often.

Do not worry about destroying webbing, it will build a new web. What else will it do with its time?

@viper69 has the best post for Avic enclosures. I haven't had to ask a single question about that after reading it. But look, we all start somewhere right?

Touché, I’ll remove everything once I get the things tomorrow, redecorate everything and one of these days replace the mesh top. Thanks for the help and once I do that I’ll post how it looks afterward and hopefully make it better for the t

Yeah, its more than just needing a completely new set up, its more than just replacing the mesh top...you need to NOT use that enclosure, its an absolute death trap for an Avic...those bugariums lack the single most important thing an Avic needs, that is airflow. Having just top only ventilation means there is literally no airflow.

The set up change needs to be prompt. There should be no traditional hide and it should never be on the ground (you have a terrestrial hide). Instead, what you want is large flat pieces of wood that extend to the top of the enclosure, and the top of that wood needs to be surrounded by plants. This gives the avic the tools to create an elevated home.

Any new enclosure you choose, must have ventilation at or near the bottom of the enclosure, this encourages airflow, as now, when air comes out the top, it can be pulled in through the bottom.

This is an example of how an avic set up should look. Keep in mind, this entire set up cost me about 12 bucks, so you dont need to break the bank to get things right.

I see well thank you, kind of upset now because the guy at the pet shop where I got the t from suggested the whole enclosure so kind of money in the trash. Should have done more research before getting the t but besides that thank you so much for the help, I’ll continue researching more on how to care for it. I will also check out the setup you used for your t because times are tough and I definitely can’t be breaking the bank lol

the guy at the pet shop
Always remember that their first duty is to make money. I read it so often that pet shop clerks give bad advice...for future reference: don't trust any retail clerk/salesman EVER...no matter what business. Always do your own research, so you can spot bad advice when you see it.

There are other uses for the enclosure. Just not for an avic.

Got some things for it, some of the same fake plants, 1 new fake plant and 1 real plant that I’m going to attempt growing in there. I haven’t changed the mesh top because I might buy a new enclosure whenever I can afford a good one, but I’m hoping nothing happens to it in the meantime. I don’t know when I’ll be able to get a new enclosure but I for sure will. Thank you all for the help, learned a bunch of stuff!

you realize?that the live plant is probably doomed to die if/when that avic buries it in webbing. plus with that glass tank you have no side/cross venting and might cause stuffy/muggy conditions each time you water it
