hi!

Pamphobeteus antinous Female
~To give an idea of her size, the bottom of the holding container she is in is 10". With a healthy stretch I believe she could span the container.
Pamphobeteus antinous Female
Reffering to the size of the spider do you mean it is adult size? How old is she?
Looking the specimen, if it's adult one, it is not really P. antinous.
Anyway, great spider!

Mikhail,
Hello, I have a few specimens similar in size and color to the one in the picture. They were sold to me as P antonious. What are the visual diferences on this Tarantula that makes it a non P antonious???

SOrry, I hope you can tell us common or scientific differences.

Hello Francisco!

Remember old days when those was not such rare species like nowadays and P. antinous was imported into Europe, States and even Russia from Peru in numbers, there were no any adult specimens which had red setae on the abdomen. Both males and females was extremely unicolor black entirely with just a witish shade on the legs (like Brachypelma sabulosum).
6 years ago exporing the tourist market in Lima i saw a number of framed tarantulas - Lasiodorides striatus and P. antinous - again, all had no any shitty red setation on back portion of the abdomen, only adult males with their steely-blue femora on first legs.

So, the question is who id these pictured and yours as P. antinous and what is their (or their parents) origin to try to id them positively?
note. We talking about the species adult coloration.
These pamphs has no christmass paterns in juves and may do have red setae on abdomen as juves and slings, but no adult.

Here is the photo of the real thing we discuss here: http://www.swiftinverts.com/species/Antinous.jpg - adult male
And adult female:

And another one; http://thebts.co.uk/forums/gallery/showphoto.php/photo/153/ppuser/385
And this one i kept long ago myself brought from Peru:

Very interesting. My juvie that was sold to me as P. antinous looks a lot like both the Pamphobeteus sp. "undescribed Peru" as shown on Kelly's site and the female in the above post by DDaake. Granted, she's not an adult yet, but it'll be interesting to see if she retains the red setae on her opisthosoma once she matures. Otherwise, it would seem that there may be a mix-up with what's considered P. antinous here in the States as i've seen a lot of people here in possesion of P. antinous with red setae, as well as for sale at shows.
