Are mechanical mothers a ploy then? Do you anything differently if you pull at day 10 or day 30?

Pulling the sac early doesn't mean a few days....lol...I'm talking pulling it at like day 10, or even sooner.

The issue is that if one single egg goes bad, it's deterioration will effect and kill all the ones around it, then as those go bad, it kills all those around them....and you can extrapolate how just one bad egg, given time, can destroy the entire sac.....sooner you pull, the sooner you stop a bad egg from going nuclear on the rest of the sac....and because an egg can go bad at any time, the only way we can eliminate a bad egg is when the eggs are exposed to us visually by being spread out in an incubator.

No, a mechanical mother involves artificially rotating the sac....the eggs are all still hidden within it. Saving a sac from a bad egg(s) can only be done if the sac is opened and the eggs removed.

At day 10, you'd treat it the same in an incubator as if it were opened at day 30.....you just have a longer wait until they develop....but you also get to see them progress, which is not only pretty neat, but educational as well.

i really love seeing the eggs. Its fascinating. Id love to experience this once. I have a nhandu color. Maybe she’ll be the one i experience this. I will give away the slings to my dealer if they want them. Im not in it for the money, and there is none to be made with this species anyways, in my position. I will ask my dealer when and if the time comes if they want them before i attempt a pairing.

Its hard to make a decision when the advice, in numbers, says one thing. You followed your instinct to and i think thats ideal. You will be better prepared at your next pairing. Feel less questioning in your decision making, and rely on your confidence.

and even if it still went sour, it wouldnt mean its a bad call.

we need a breeding FAILURE thread. I know we have a breeding record section.

but it would be cool to have a short and sweet failure thread. Where we only see the fails. This is so informative and helps build confidence.

daves little beasties does share “bad results’ every now and then when he gets them. Its very insightful and humble.

Nothing to get excited about as these are infertile eggs. Never paired her and had her since a 1 inch sling

It was depressing for me and my irminia, just a bad day of what appears to be healthy eggs but not fertile. @cold blood laid it out best, you have to remove all the eggs for complete inspection.

I didn't because it was pointless. If I paired her I would have opened the sac completely.

If it was fertile it would be a nightmare for me. There's no way I am prepared to deal with that many mouths to feed. Also there's no way I have buyers lined up for them.

P. irminia are abundant in the U.S. Even if I tried giving them away it would be unsuccessful.

youre a responsible keeper/could be breeder. Its takes a lot of restraint and intelligence to not breed just for the fun of it. Id buy from you because i know you have ethics.

Nah, I would have contributed to arachnoculture as a whole and that's payment enough for me.

I do have a breeding project planned for the future. I do not have high expectations on success. This will be with my female Aphonopelma moderatum.

It is very difficult to produce a fertile eggsac in captivity with A. moderatum but I'm going to try nonetheless. If successful, which I doubt I will be offering the slings for free to those that are:
1. Experienced and responsible keepers
2. Want them and possibly want to plan their own breeding project in the future

It's a goal for me to see this particular Aphonopelma to be more abundant in arachnoculture in the U.S. Captive bred only and put a huge decrease on importers having them imported for sale.

A dream I have is to put a damper on the field collecting of this tarantula which unfortunately is prolific here in the U.S.

It's a dream not a complete reality but it's my dream.

i look forward to hearing about your project.

we don’t have tarantula colonies like the USA does. I would feel privileged to travel to usa just to photography wild tarantulas. It would be easy to harvest of course, but i wouldnt.

i dont even harvest edible wild plants when i find rare ones. I enjoy “finding” them and photographing them.

we have one species of possible tarantula in south ontario. But its small and very hard to find. Thank the gods. Because even if its small, its still “exotic”. And the second people find them, they will harvest.





if i could find these one day wow. I think id lose my mind.

the fang ratio and black body is so cool. Its a real classy spider. Very sci-fi with anime manga mecca style.

Read post #18 again.....I suggested pulling it then....day 10 I think....and laid out the reasons....potential of a bad egg was one of those reasons

I can understand that it might not have been clear as I quoted another suggesting 30 days.

Don't beat yourself up, you will have more chances and this should just be seen as part of the learning process.

Youre special like that. It goes against the mainstream grain. The general opinion was to let the sac in with the mother.

you obviously have a magic bag of experiences. And you have confidence in your methods.

did you burn ants, as a kid, with a magnifieing glass? Or drowned wasps in the pool?

I burned no ants....and I saved the drowning bees and wasps from the pool
