went to lowes today and while I was there I checked to see if they had vermiculite and they did, I looked for peat moss and didnt see any. They did have this stuff called Orchid Moss 100% organic... Can I use that to mix with the vermiculite?

What they're selling as orchid moss is probably straight sphagnum moss, not peat moss. Sphagnum moss doesn't have the consistency you want as a substrate.

If you have a Home Depot in your area, check them. Otherwise, nurseries should carry peat moss in bales that will last you for years. Mine only cost $14.

although "mixing" the two together looks like crap, putting down a small layer of Orchid Moss on top of ur substrate, it doesnt grow or anything but it breaks up the "dirt meets branch" look. u could also (being in the boones) go collect native live moss from the woods, cut it into squares and shake off as much dirt from the roots as possible...put it in a deep freeze for a couple weeks (to kill parasites and bugs) then thaw it out, wash it in RO water to clean off any remaining dirt and plant it in ur tank on top of your coco fiber or peat moss...gives it a very nice natural look to it, and the moss doesnt need to much light to grow and thrive. We've been using it in vivariums for years, i dont see why it wouldnt work in a T tank.

drop a few isopods in the moss to clean up any waste and u shouldnt have any problems. but thats just my thought on moss. ;)

theres no petco in boone man, all we got is walmart and lowes, and its not even a super walmart
Look in their garden/horticulture section. They normally keep bags and bales of shredded coconut husk (look at the ingredients label) right next to the bags and bales of peat.

Or go to an independent horticulture/gardening/landscaping supplier instead. Almost every burg of 5,000 people or more has at least one.

BTW, "Boone" where?

You can get a bale of peat from lowes (in the garden section; it is sometimes seasonal.) for like 4.97 and it is almost 4 cubic feet....
