Well, I did it! I pushed the idrt away, only to find a web plug of dirt sealing the coconut. I lifted the coconut up, only to find Opie has spun himself a floor.:? (too cool), needless to say, I shined a light inside the nut and saw Opie moving about. He's okay!!!!!:D Yeah!!!!!!!! Now, I will leave him in peace so he can do whatever he feels he needs to do.
Thanks for all y'all's inout. I really appreciate it.{D

Bothering a tarantula that could be potentially molting can be bad for their health. Should ya'll have found them flipped over & bothered them, you can disturb them enough to make them stop molting, which can sometimes be the end to your tarantula.

Leave them alone.

Opie had his pront leg (I call it a paw), stuck out all night last night. This morning he was back inside. I'm going to leave him alone, I just wanted to stop sniffing his home every morning to see if he was gone.:(
Now that I know he is alive and well, I'll let him be. even if he closes himself back up inside the coconut.:?

Well, I got up this morning and Opie closed himself back up inside his coconut. Dirt sealed off the entrance. I saw a little bit of him yesterday when I got gome from work, looked like he was taking a peek out. Now that I know he is alive, I'll let him be and come out on him own terms.
Curious, how long it will be till I see him again.
Thanks to all for all the input and suggestions.

I see one of my T's less than every other month...leave it alone!!! It is an (arachnid) insect and has no need to see you ever. Touching anything in the enclosure unnecessarily is bad for them and as mentioned can kill your pet.

My sling does this, but she's nice and holed herself in against the clear side of the jar, so I can still see her. I worry about her drinking but she knows what she's doing.

Just got back from vacation, hoping my Opie has decided to come out, but no such luck. My daughter made sure he had fresh water everyday and misted the tank, (just in case) but he has not come out of hiding yet Doesnt smell inside the tank, so I know he's not dead. I guess he'll be out when he wants to come out.

I thought that rosies, being an arid species, didn't need misting? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that arid species prefer dry substrate, and some individuals will refuse to sit on damp substrate.

yeah phobwtophile rosies are but the OP is misting because the t is holed up during molting process and isnt coming out to drink... the op is doing the right thing.. theres a big difference between lightly misting once or twice a week for moisture and mild humidity and FLOODING the substrate

Yea, I agree about leaving Opie alone even though I'm not the more patient person and miss seeing him. I can only assume he is alright and knows what he's doing. I thought about disturbing him to make sure he was alright, but I promised myself that after the last "disturbance", proving he was o.k. then, I would not bother him again and wait for him to make the first move (so to say). I am curious how much bigger he is and I hope once he does decide to come out from the coconut he is able to fit through the opening (door), i was surprised he even got it there (in the first place) the size he was!
Thanks for all the comments. I appreciate everyone's help.

My rose tarantula (Opie) short for Ocho Pantas, spanish for 8 legs-is doing something I've never seen.
I've had him since last October and he molted last December, in the typical way...spun a web hammock and found hin layihg on his back and (TaaDaa) found his molt the next morning.
Haven't really noticed his abdoimen getting patchy like he did last December, and I recently cleaned out his aquarium last week and got him some new crickets to munch on.
A few days ago he started pulling mounds of dirt around thr opening of his coconut to the point where he is almost all enclosed inside the coconut.
Do I have reason to be concerned?
I can't really find anything about building dirt mounds in the books I have and what it may mean.
Can anyone give me a clue? I appreciate all responses.

Sounds like normal behavior to me. My first was a rosie that liked to bury its water dish after dragging it across the cage. Filling in openings in a hide with dirt is pretty common for alot of Ts. I assume they are just blocking out light or preparing for a moult.

My OBT demonstrates the same behaviors. It isnt anything to be worried about.

Ts dont read the same books we do. They are going to do strange things we dont understand. Just enjoy watching your T and take good care of it.

I thought about it, but my hubby didn't want me to get Opie to begin with (like I ever listen to him) so I know getting a second will cause some discord.
He finds Opie interesting enough, but not enough to put up with a second one.
Ha Ha...Even my daughter, who is a major Arachnophobe is warming up to Opie. Every morning she comes downstairs and asks Opie "How's it hangn?"
She even asks him, on a daily basis to come out and "play".

I don't think Opie comes out at night for water because the dirt is undisturbed every morning, so I pour water into the dirt around the coconut hoping it seeps under the coconut allowing him to get some water.

They do sometimes come out at night, tip-toe around, do whatever they want and seal their burrows back up like nothing ever happened. The only way I know is they accidentally leave clues like substrate or boluses in the waterdish. You should set your alarm for 4am every night and sneak up on the little ninja and catch him red papled. :D

My curly hair sling has been barricaded away from the world for about 2 weeks now. I just leave him/her alone.

If it's hungry or thirsty, it will come out eventually.

Opie knows what is best for Opie.

He doesnt need or want your help, so leave him alone.

He'll come out whenever he is done doing whatever he is doing.
