egg> pops top to eggs with legs> molts to first instar. These are first instar, and the ones in the other thread look like first instar. I know it's counterintuitive. But the casting of the egg skin when they pop to eggs with legs apparently doesn't count as a molt. It seems weird to me. I never thought versi's looked different from other first instars.

Yes. Eggs with legs on the 10th, and now first instar as of yesterday/today.

it was a lot faster than I was thinking it would be too. I think they started popping into eggs with legs on the 9th, when they were in Lori's care. The pics I took on the 10th were after some of them were completed with their transition to eggs with legs.

There are still some that haven't developed legs yet though...will these eggs not ever develop, or are they just really slow?

I would think that if there are eggs that are now 1st instar, the ones that are eggs are not going to develop.

drats. That sucks. There are a lot of undeveloped ones. They still look healthy, but they haven't popped out yet. :(

There are currently 37 that are first instar and many more that haven't molted yet.

Ya know, for whatever reason, I was thinking that first instar implied more movement than these guys are capable of. These guys can move around and feed on each other, but the movement seems more accidental than intentional.

Heh, that's just their excuse. "I didn't mean to eat my sac-mate, it was an accident!" ;)

Keep them around till they turn black or shrivel just to make sure.

yep, planning on that. I've picked out the dark ones as they go, but the yellow ones I'm leaving until I'm sure.

One down... :(

One baby died. He had a bad molt to first instar which carried over to his molt to second instar. He ended up losing a leg and dying. Poor little guy.

Most of the others are little active blue streaks at this point though. I separated out 33 babies last night and this morning several more had molted out. It looks like only a dozen more have to molt before I can get a final count.
