...well at least my first intentional sac...all my others were WC females.

One of my versicolors laid a big beautiful sac last night. I can't get a picture since she is webbed up nice and tight in her hide, but candling her web revealed a nice yellow glow! It's going to be hard not to check on her every 10 seconds to see how the sac is doing.

She was only bred to the male once back in October and she laid her sac 104 days after breeding. I hope the other two versicolors get the hint now and also drop a sac.

So...how often can I check on the sac? I want to candle it every so often to check for bad eggs so I can pull it if necessary, but I don't want to bother the female too much and have her get agitated and eat her sac.

I check every 3-5 days depending on what I am doing. I have checked more, and never had it be a problem.
Congrats on the sac!!!

That would probably be a good idea. I'm not the most patient person, so the wait is seriously going to be painful.

Thanks. :wall:

I'm not going to wait 40 days to pull the sac from her. At least once I have the sac opened I can pass the time by watching them develop.

In my opinion you can play death metal next to a female holding a sac and if it is a viable sac she is not going to eat it.

Thanks. :wall:

That is a big reason I like to take mine so early. It's really cool to watch them grow. I have been taking some sacs at day 10 and watching the changes every day. It's really something to watch!

I was thinking around day 15-18 ish to pull it unless I see a bad egg prior to then.

I know! I could take a picture now, but you'd just see a big chunk of webbing under a piece of bark. She's hiding behind some thick webbing!

The only reason we even know there is a sac is because I got adventurous with the flashlight. Pictures would be pretty much a boring white tube.

I'm sure there will be plenty once the sac is pulled though. :D The momma's so skinny right now!

I would recommend pulling that sac no earlier than 30 days. At this time the slings should be mobile 2nd stage nymphs and much easier to incubate. If you pull the sac and they are still 1st stage, they are not mobile and cannot reposition themselves easily. This can cause any mold from dead nymphs to spread rapidly to the rest of the brood.
As for death metal, I would recommend against it. I have seen eggsacs get eaten that were definitely viable. I have saved nymphs that were in the process of being eaten, then incubated them to maturity.
She'll be happiest if you leave her alone. You can check every couple days, but as long as you don't see a little white eggsac bolus on the ground, then she hasn't eaten the sac.
Congrats. and good luck.

Dan
