"It may take some tim e but, just let your fingers dangle around in there."

thats the worst idea ever. I used to have a little bastard hamster named 'spaz' and i thought yeah! lemme just let em sniff me and hell get used to me!

I always ended up with some teeth cutting to the bone.

I've had four hamsters in the past and the last three lived to be about four years old and where as tame as pudding. Really tame pudding at that. I used to do exactly what has been suggested: give them a treat then put your hand in the cage while he's eating (I only ever kept males, dunno if that makes a difference).
Another thing I might have done different is that my hamster cage was a more of a small guinea pig cage: 3ft x 18inches. I lined it with paper and sawdust and filled it half way up with sheets of kitchen roll (which they spend hours shredding up), cardboard toilet roll centres, and small cardboard boxes and some branches from a fruit tree. Maybe that's the answer: let them nacker themselves out before you try to handle them!

every hamster i've had is mean and now i hate them.

rats are definatley better. i've been bit by a few that i had, but it was only a one time thing for them.

i'd like to get another rat but all of the ones i've had have always gotten serious tumors. if it weren't for that, i'd really like to get another one.

I have owned several hamsters and none of them ever bit me. try washing your hands really good before holding them. if they smell food or salt they will bite. they love salt wheels. even when a person is sweating and they rub it on their hands like rubbing it of a forehead they can smell it and they will bite. just remember they can smell alot more then we humans can.

I did. I just always changed the litter and they started to smell better. i always used the ceder bark thats for hamsters. it also makes the room smell nice.

I did get these wood chew toys for him, and i put fresh carrots and apples and all sorts of fruits and veg. for him. I wonder why it's not working
I'm not sure if anyone else said this but, giving him all these fresh fruits and vegetables might have given him wet tail in the first place. Be careful with how much you give him.

^ I was just going to say that. Apples and carrots alike are a common culprit, high sugar and high moisture. Feed only small amounts of fruit and veg sparingly, and never feed cucumber or anything very high moisture or sugar.

As far as taming... I say interact with him outside of his territory to start the taming process. Hamsters aren't "mean," they're territorial. When you take him out of his domain, he is less inclined to be bitey. Offer (healthy) treats from your hands, let him sniff and climb on your still hands placed on the bottom of the area he is exploring, etc. Start with gloves if need be and work from there. Do not wrench away if the hamster bites; this results in more injury and emboldens them. Most rodents will release if you puff a gentle burst of air at their face, frankly, though I don't know if this makes them any less tame as I've never had many taming issues with my mice. And almost every animal I've encountered is apt to let go if you force into them when they bite instead of pulling away; works on everything from puppies to geckos because it makes the experience unpleasant for them and simultaneously proves you won't be intimidated. Just be careful with a small animal because they are easy to harm if any force is used.

Consider bringing your question to a rodent forum; they may have additional training tips that don't involve relinquishing or trading the animal, as they're more apt to be passionate about hamsters than folks on a board who probably think hamsters are an ill tempered snake snack (no offense intended by that; it's just always best to go to a species-specific community for specific questions).

okay, so I have this hamster and its not that nice, and it bites a lot. stuff started comming out of his butt. We took it to Petsmart, and they said he had wettail. So we gave him medicine, and he got better. But he still bites (AND IT HURTS!) So are there any suggestions as how i could calm him down, or i could be a better handler???
i would squeeze it real hard till more stuff comes out its butt.
itll quit biting soon after everything comes out.

i used to keep those things...god they were always biting me..so became snake food.
