okay, so I have this hamster and its not that nice, and it bites a lot. stuff started comming out of his butt. We took it to Petsmart, and they said he had wettail. So we gave him medicine, and he got better. But he still bites (AND IT HURTS!) So are there any suggestions as how i could calm him down, or i could be a better handler???

get him something to chew on. rodents and certain other small mammals need to continuously chew in order to prevent their teeth from growing too long and disabling their ability to eat.

It may take some tim e but, just let your fingers dangle around in there. Let the hamster smell them. Hamsters recognize smells, much like dogs. But be sure that you dont have it too close to his mouth so he doesnt bite :p

Hamster's are just nasty. The best thing you could do is swap it for a rat.

Ditto, hamsters are just bad seeds, out to bite at every turn.

A fancy rat, on the other hand, is sociable and biting is not it's first response to fear. You can handle them all day long and they wont even think about biting. And they're awake when you are (when you walk up to the cage they come to the bars and beg to be let out) and they are not grumpy lilke hamsters are.

Rats are the way to go.

hamasters are not bad animals. they are kind and docile, but sometimes very nasty. i had one hamster who loved me and never bit me, even when i handled him irreponsibly. but i had one that didnt want me near him. if your animal had wet tail you should have swapped it. petsmart will let you swap your pet for another or for your price you paid. another thing you should have not handle him for a few days. let him get settled, your hamster is very stressed. search google for how to handle a hamster and when to.

When I was a kid my brother used to breed hamsters & so he had around 25 all the time along with 5 or 6 regular pets... some were very mellow & never bit at all & some
were pschyo... my point is that they are all different & just because one likes to bite doesn't mean another, even from the same litter will.

Well we did take him to petsmart and we walked in thinking we were going to trade him, but they put medicine in our cart and said he'd be fine. We felt guilty, so we just gave him the medicine, and let him be for a week. So we didnt hold him until he got over the wet tail. :)

hamsters are naturally aggressive, suprises me they are still recommended as kids pets as ive had deeper bites off them than any of my reptiles and things
best thing to do is leave it as a non handleable pet as you would aggressive invertebrates and wear gloves while cleaning it out

we had the hamster from H%LL, I gave it to a co-worker. My co-worker and her two daughters have managed to tame the hamster enough to take it out of its cage and carry it around. don't know how they did it.

well i had a few hamsters and dwarf hamsters. i had a dwarf that always bit when you put your hand in the cage, so i did what i did with a Tarantula... i used a small container/box/ toilet paper tube, got what critter i wanted to pick up to go into it (or a postcard for a T to get on) picked up the box/tube and let the critter from there walk onto my arm/into my hand (do this while sitting on the floor just incase you have a jumper. my hamster never bit AFTER he was picked up, but boy did he attack ANYTHING getting into the cage INCLUDING when i place fruit or veggies into the cage. terretorial critter {D

I agree with the posts suggesting rats. Most hamsters are the devil's spawn...

I trained mine out of biting by bribing it with treats, while wearing falcon gloves. After that, coax it onto the glove... with food. Eventually, pick it up with the glove. Downgrade to a lighter and more flexible one when it seems to not bite, and eventually, go bare handed.

Warning! Some just remain perpetually grumpy.
