That's what he's doing, mate

@howaboutno1, here's the info you're looking for. It looks like you're in the clear, but read it for yourself to double check.

What a helpful member - so in the US in certain states it's illegal to own tarantulas - well I never, I really didn't know that, as informative as ever @EulersK - I'm glad I'm here in the UK, so many different laws in so many different states, makes me glad to be British.

I'm glad you're happy where you live. I'm pretty happy I live where I live as well. I like the fact that in my state, I (and others that live here) can decide how we would like to live without being solely dictated to by a large federal (country) government body. That local problems that matter to us can be decided by us and not some dude (half the country away) who has no clue about the issue.

It's not very hard to find out the laws in the state you live in. They are publicly available and with the greatness that is the internet pretty easy to find.

I honestly couldn't imagine living in a country that had blanket laws for everyone regardless of the needs of local smaller groups or how they would like to live.

As I'm in Scotland we do have different laws to the rest of the UK - It makes sense to have different laws depending which state you live in - wholly due to the size of the US,(you could fit the UK 100 times over in the area of the US) what's good for one state may be completely wrong and unforgivable in another. Just my 2c worth. And as you say it's not hard to find out the laws in the state you live in.

State laws would be very unlikely to cover this.. restrictions are done by local municipalities....so check with your village, town or city to be sure....whats legal by you might be illegal down the road across town lines.

This! Virginia has no laws against tarantulas, but Fairfax county (for example) does. Cross into Loudoun county and you're in the clear for the most part, but then go to Leesburg (in Loudoun) and that crappy little city has a law against them, too. State is a good place to start, but check even more locally.

While I can't add much more to the O.P. I personally called the animal control/adoption facility in my hometown to double-check everything.

Now, how we word our questions to animal control/adoption can mean everything. I phrased my question something like, "Are small animals, such as tarantulas, allowed to be kept in enclosures in our place of residence in the city of ____." The volunteer I spoke with responded with, "oh, you mean pet store tarantulas?" To which I answered "yes," amd explained tarantulas were sold (at the time) in Petco stores in the surrounding suburbs. The volunteer checked with her higher-up, who then checked the law statutes. Basically It was "yes."

Maybe in some cases you might not get someone so cooperative but...the more you cooperate with law enforcement/civil authorities the more easier your life (and the lives of your spiders) will be and perhaps the more responsible city officials may see you as.

Good thing I'm paranoid, otherwise I never would have known!

That's crazy - so from a mile away if you're close to the border, the law can be completely different depending on which side of the border of your particular state you live in - absurd!

Does that make your blood boil mate, or do you see the common sense in the law? Just wondering what your take on the whole situation is?

Can't answer for @Thistles, but county laws regarding things like this are rarely enforced so it's pretty much not a concern for 98% of the people in the hobby. I'm sure it could become an issue if you were using them in a public place for educational purposes or setting up an expo, something along those lines, but that's most likely about it.

Is it illegal to have Ts as pets in Kentucky?
I don't know but here's an insider trick for you straight from 'old world' Italy.

Here in 2003 the puppets in charge declared illegal every arachnid. Every freaking arachnid, to the point that... "see those house spiders living up there in the corner?" Yeah, technically that was 'keeping arachnids' as well for those nuts, lol.

Certain people here called the authority etc (since they had, like me btw, T's and other arachnids before the advent of such law) for let them know, arrange... whatever.

Yeah, I did that as well, sure: they are still waiting to see mah face ;-)

Conclusion is 'mah', I wouldn't care too much... "you" can't here 'knock' at my door without valid proofs (so no bull) for search for... T's :)

The only time I have heard any of the venomous snake laws quoted is when a guy got bite and was hospitalized. If your T got out and bit someone or something like that it might come into play. Otherwise it's usually not enforced or noticed.

It's beyond stupid. I know a lot of people who ignore the law. It matters for pet stores, though.
