So my first T arrived on Wednesday, I had a look at their den earlier today and noticed there was a bit of webbing left around the entrance to it. I guess I wanted to ask if this was normal behavior for a juvenile t in a new enclosure.

My adult g pulchripes 4 female did that. Shed lay some lines of silk at the entrance. Then she would come out at night. And then back in her hide and redo it.

since autumn though, she full on dirt packed everything and shes probably gone in hiding for year. Im trying to not get my hopes up.

Protective Barrier, First line of defense, etc.
I'm assuming that's normal and not necessarily indicative of feeling unsafe?

Also, I just saw him/her come out of the hide and start lining some of the outside of it with webbing which was cool to watch!

It's all normal eggs don't worry, your little one us just settling in n making home 😊. Soon your viv will be a heap of dirt n web with a t in there somewhere πŸ˜‚.
It's why so many of us end up with lots of t's , the original t burrows or webs or both n hides so you get another to watch, you already have the food n space so why not? Then inevitably that one hides and so the cycle continues πŸ˜†. We all fall for it eventually 😁.

How long would you say it can take for them to settle in? What would be indicative of them having settled in and feeling comfortable in their home I guess. I appreciate however that is probably asking how long a piece of string is

It is a piece of string lol , short story it depends on your individual t , as long as little one is eating and decorating their enclosure ie digging webbing ect your doing a good job and your t is already settled, if little one wasn't they would be a ball of legs in the corner not eating or on the roof of the viv away from the sub.
If your floofer is already webbing and making the enclosure theirs your half way there, if they have taken food your golden πŸ˜‰.

Yeah, I saw her last night making a web around the entrance, was pretty cool to watch. But this morning now I can see the entrance to her enclosure, she's clearly been doing a bit of landscaping because the entrance to the burrow is definitely less open than it was the past couple of days.

Ah settled then 😌 you can stop worrying πŸ˜ŠπŸ˜‰
For now at least I guess  I've been reading alot about how it's the norm for the first T to be equally anxiety as excitement inducing hahaha

At least I have this community of experienced keepers to go to for help tho!

If youre lucky, it will end its burrow against enclosure wall. Youll have a window view inside and and wont worry if it stays down there. I add a peice of black paper to cover that area. I can lift it up for my routine inspections.

The webbing helps them detect intruders inside their hide. Anything big going through the lines of silk, will send off an alarm.

Even more then that! They can literally feel dust fall on it ! Their hairs are so sensitive they can feel the atoms and molecules bumping round in the air !
Hang on ....

@viper69 shared this with me ages ago it helped me understand their sensitivity and behaviour because of it , I hope you enjoy it as much as I did 😊.

That's actually wild.

As I'm technically a biologist, having a pet tarantula is a really cool opportunity for me to observe and learn about arachnid behavior.

My background is more in plants, so I know very little about the biology of tarantulas or arachnids in general.

Great opportunity to learn.

I thought it was cool too 😊

What an interesting string in your bow, my brother likes to mess about with plants too, he is always telling me random factoids about them but unfortunately it never stays πŸ˜†, the big words loose me πŸ˜‚.
@Wolfram1 is my plant dude on here, he makes the most beautiful planted vivs you should look through his stuff it may give you ideas with your own vivs.

I say vivs because I have a feeling you will end up with more then one, their biology and behaviour is to facinating to resist 😊.

Eventually I'd quite like to move this T to a an enclosure planted up with a few species from it's native range, I've been doing a bit of research into that lately.

And yes, I can definitely tell at this point I'll end up getting more than one

I've decided that If I get offered one of the jobs I'm being interviewed for then I want to get a Thrixopelma cyaneolum after my first paycheck, or if that's not available a T.albo or GBB.

Ah Thrixopelma cyaneolum πŸ₯° Thrixopelma are my favourite genus (tied with Sericopelma) they are bold beautiful pray destroying machines πŸ₯°. They are the perfect mix of crazy and beautiful. (My favourite combo!) I have a small male cyaneolum he is nuts but my friend @Cmac2111 has an af (my boys intended gf) and she is his most chilled t πŸ€·πŸ»β€β™€οΈ.
Personally ockerti and purines are my favourites due to their green colours and crazy nature, neither are sure if they are arboreal or terrestrial πŸ˜†. They are a little high strung but as long as you know what to expect you should be fine πŸ™‚

Albo are great too I have all 3 locals, chilled but have a strong food response, they tbh would be a perfect second t. They are cheap too can pick up a well started t for a few pounds.

I also have gbb fast skittish webbing nuts but stunning 😍 if you don't mind fast moving spiders you will be fine they are super hardy n like it a little dryer then others 😊

I am sure you will find the right one for you though 😊
