Just don’t do what Petco does and you’ll be fine

Was in there a while back picking up some crickets for a change in feeders. Girl who was in there knew I kept T’s. Had recently picked up avic avic for my gf as she has gotten into T’s. While being rung up, she was asking me questions, then proceeded to ask if my avicularia had begun to burrow yet. I was like yep... they’ll do that haha.

Absurd, I mean I know sanitisation is being stressed right now but this is next level! The amount of product placement and cash grabs in care sheets are hilarious as well, every other recommendation is to buy zoomed this and exoterra that...

What is this a cringeworthy and potentially hazardous caresheet for tarantulas or a guide on how to combat the coronavirus?

Come on corporate Petco, I know you guys are clueless, but wow.

On a more serious note: I 100% agree with the title of this thread.

This is just so they can sell more substrate and cork bark folks.

Nothing to do with sanitization. They know this is not necessary one bit.

I've had to write some horrible trash for work but at least I researched it first. This writer ought to be in another field.
For "work" purposes, that is an excellent short write up sadly.

Coco-Fibre and Cork Bark will be flying off the shelves.

Sickening, but that's all its about.

If you go to the page it is because they claim that inverts carry infectious disease like salmonella and should be cleaned to prevent the spread of disease.... they say you should always wash your hands after interacting with an invertebrate.

Wow ! That's... that's a new low ! Cleaning with bleach ? That's one way to risk your T's health. It's unfortunate that most pet shop staff are clueless. At least, some admit to not knowing much. Inverts carry salmonella ? Really ? Could've sworn reptiles had that risk

So this is why I've been holed up in my house for the last 7 weeks? :bag:

Yup it was do to the spread of infectious disease by invertebrates!! Watch out everyone tarantulas are spreading infectious disease, take extra precautions and bathe your invertebrates in a dilute solution of alcohol everyday!

To be fair, Eco Earth is a perfectly acceptable substrate.

OTOH, heat lamps, heat mats, heat rocks, cleaning with bleach every week, enclosures with screen or mesh...all inappropriate.

They're also trying to cover their behinds from potential lawsuits. I know someone who worked at PetSmart and apparently elsewhere in the country a customer caught something from a rat they bought at the store and sued the company.

You guys apparently haven’t seen Petsmart’s feeding section on their pamphlet about taking care of a tarantula/scorpion.

It says, “Feed your arachnid once every day or 2, at night. Only offer as much food as your scorpion or tarantula can consume by morning. Remove any leftovers.”

I don’t know about you guys, but if I did that with my tarantulas, I would have REALLY FAT tarantulas.

Of course, they also recommend using at least a 10 gallon aquarium with a screened, locking lid, heat mats under the bottom, and to mist from a spray bottle. You also must measure the humidity with a hygrometer and change out the substrate once a month 😂
