Identification of tliltocatl schroederi

Hello I just got this T but it was sale like a tliltocatl schroederi but I see only black specimens so why this is brown???

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing the photos. What size is your specimen now? Can you upload an update pic? When does the carapace start turning dark? I would’ve suspected the first pic to be vagans or relatives.

Think he was about 2-3cm when I got him (Feb '19) and he's moulted 4 times since then (all the photos were taken once he'd hardened up after a moult so the 4th pic is after his most recent moult), he's about 8cm now.

Are you sure that’s a Mexican black velvet because it’s carapace shouldn’t be brown my niece has two young slings that are a molt away from being juveniles and their carapace isn’t brown like that. I can have her send me pics and I can post later if needed for comparison

I assume that you actually meant to reply to my message but yes I'm sure he's a T. schroederi.

There is a lot of variation with carapace colouration in some species (just a quick image search of T. schroederi shows varying amounts of brown on the carapace), and individuals of the same species don't all get their adult colouration at the same size. Brachypelma hamorii/smithi are great examples of why carapace colouration is not reliable for an ID.
