How to get your mom to allow a tarantula in the house...

Step 1: Do all of your homework and be reading a book whenever she sees you

Step 2: Do the dishes (and cook dinner if you know how)

Step 3: Take out the trash, clean out the fridge, help organize the garage

Step 4: Get better grades

Step 5: learn scientific tarantula names and facts to lend credibility to your request

If she doesn't die from shock, she will probably let you get a tarantula. Or at least you may get 20 min added to your curfew hehehe.

I've been wanting a T for a loooooooong time. I think I've been asking my mom ever since I first saw one when I was little. Anyone who's seen my profile has seen how many animals I have. I had to work for every single one of them. I had to prove that I could be responsible. Now she basically approves anything as long as I pay for it.

For the longest time she said no to getting a tarantula because she said that my dad wouldn't like it. It turns out that he doesn't care as long as it's in my room. My room is sort of a Little Shop of Horrors for him. He's totally afraid of my gerbils. You should have seen his face when I told them that there were baby gerbils in the house;) .

Parents are hard to work with but they generally listen if you present things the right way.

You may have to wait until you move out and get your own place...at that point you'll probably own 100 Ts. There was a slogan that went something like: "Your mother said no, you're grown up, now no one can stop you..."

Some people have serious arachnophobia and no amount of talk from their kids is going to change that. If its just a minor objection here are some selling points:

1. A rosie is cheap to buy and maintain.

2. You can get a cheap enclosure that is escape proof.

3. You understand the hair flicking is more dangerous than the bite, and you know not to get the hairs in your eyes.

4. Throw in something to sweeten the deal: keeping your room clean, mowing the lawn, throwing out the trash, you know what your mom would love for you to do or do better...use it!

Good Luck! :D
Very well put. Great idea as well for up in comers.

Maybe you should just accept that you can't have one, and wait a couple years until you move out? Part of growing up is realizing that you can't just keep pestering and pestering until you get what you want. Granted it sucks, but it's worth the wait - I had to wait years to get my first reptile for the same reason.

get an enclosure. get some substrate and get a plastic spider.
Your mom will freak out when she sees this. Explain to her that it is only a plastic spider and since she won't allow you to keep a T, then that will do for now.
Time will pass when your mom will get used to the plastic spider and that she wont even look at it. Thats the time when you replace the plastic spider with a real T. (Probably a T that burrows or a T that barely moves) :) hehehe {D

Kidding aside, I guess you can just educate her about the T. Let her know the reason why you want it. Hear her out and respect her decision whatever it maybe (since you're still living with her). Time will come when you will have a place of your own. Then you can keep all the T's that you like. :)

Wow lol. I'd be more afraid of a centi than a T.

IMO centi's have more creep factor (IMO).

Sounds like you tried and her mind is made up.
Not everyone sees them the way we do.
Look on the bright side, she let you get SOMETHING, which is more than some anti 'creepy crawly' parentals do.
You have something to look forward to now-and at least you can stay on the boards and chat T talk in the meantime.

Lol I know this isn't a good suggestion but my dad used to basically say no to everything and I just went ahead and bought my first scorp and T while I was away from home lol and he got to meet them when I got home. For someone who borders on arachnophobe tho even he says my Lividum was looking very pretty today....lol which she is (first time in a few months its been out and just after molt)

My only advice as someone beginning is don't buy an intermediate species (yes I may get sacked by people saying cobalts aren't intermediate). Try to find an active terrestrial like ur Rosie idea or a B. Smithi.

I personally think that if "creep factor" is determined by legs your other animals are a hundred times creepier. Parents have a weird judge of creepy.

My dad wanted me to get hamsters instead of gerbils because (get this) he doesn't like tails. I'm not even kidding. He isn't creeped out by a tarantula but if I asked for a snake it would be a solid no. People's "creep factors" seem to generally irrational.
