Being the freak i am, i am hopelessly in love with huntsman spiders, and i was wondering if maybe a H. Davidbowie would be good for a first time owner. Probably not, but ive read some stuff convincing me otherwise. So, is it a good choice? They are soooo pretty!

They’re quite fast, so not exactly the best spider for a beginner (although I’ve actually found davidbowie to be a bit calmer than other Heteropodas). If you manage to find any, I recommend Olios giganteus as a first huntsman. From my experience they’re pretty chill and even tolerate a bit of handling.

All huntsman are fast. All huntsman can bolt. All huntsman are skittish on various levels.

In my opinion, you should get whichever one you want. Just be sure you can keep the moisture levels up on the tropical species because they dry out really fast as slings.

Heteropoda venatoria is a cheap and plentiful species, so that may be a good first one until you get the care down. Bonus of being available at all sizes, so you'll get practice. H. davidbowie are typically only available as slings, but overall care is pretty much the same, just with smaller food. H. venatoria is a pretty hardy species and can take a variety of temps, humidity, etc.

I picked h. Davidbowie because they're more chill, im a sucker for a fast one though

Not sure i want a h. Venatoria, the leg to body ratio freaks me out a tad

That'll be a problem with many Huntsmans, ha ha, it's just a matter of how much leg you see when they are in their resting position...

Thanks,

You’re likely going to end up with slings. These eat fruit flies or pinhead crickets most readily. Larger specimens will take regular feeders like crickets and roaches.
