Trying to get a feel\connetion for\to this site, so I won't be as timmed to post. So I was wondering; How many of you name your inverts? How did you all get into the "hobby"? Is it more of a hobby or a passion for you? What's up with calling it a hobby anyways? I know inverts aren't capable of being as much of pets as your typial mammal is. Well for me their more entertaining than keeping plants lol. My questions may seem silly, but I'm just.. no let me reword that lol <seeing how many posts the common user has> but I don't even consiter myself a novice, trying to break the ice, using a feather lol (if you know what I mean)..
I got into keeping arachnids/ inverts because I always had a interest in them (if not passion). since I am a scorpio (oct 23rd b-day) and since I myself am like a arachnid socially. I can relate quite well to creatures in the arachnid family, being that I'm a loner, anti-social, and I don't care for people that much. sorry if that seems akwards lol. But you know how many people don't like\ care for arachnids? Well many people don't care for me either. You're not likely to see me in a crowd.
I have a facebook and myspace, but I barely message anyone on there anyone, and I long have learned not to make new friends, since i'm like an arachnid in human form hehe. used to have a slight fear of arachids, until I grow wiser and realize every has a place in this univise (can't spell heh heh)
more so you can actually learn from anything or everything; as the Lord teaches us in mystical ways. so I joined this site, cause at least here we share an interest for inverts at the least lol. hehheh I should have posted this in the introduction area sorry, didn't know I would go so deep down about myself. from inquiries to a self-description... Thank you all for reading!

I do not name any of my spiders, scorps, frogs, snakes or stick insects.....I only named the dogs.
It is not a hobby to me,although it may have started out that way,it is infact,an addiction

I name my tarantulas but I only have 5 so far. Im sure when I start getting larger numbers I wont be naming them. If I do I'll have to keep a label on every home to remember their names.

I wouldn't really call it a "hobby"... Nor a "passion." Not quite a "vice" either... I'd say... "Obsession" is a good word for it. Actually, now that I think about it, "addiction" seems to be the perfect term for me.

My name is Hobo, and I have an arachnid problem.

Yep, all 18 of them (15 Ts, 1 wolf spider, and 2 myriapods) have names, detailed logs on an Excel spreadsheet, and it is most definitely a passion for me. "Hobby" just isn't a strong enough word, but I suppose that fits also. I am simply fascinated with everything they do....from molting, to eating, to simply walking around in that slow, methodical way.

Welcome to the boards, Lakrieger. :)

I too can relate to arachnids as I too am anti-social, do not care for friends, a loner. I have loved arachnids ever since I can remember. I think to me its a deep passion. I spend alot of time near them and watch/learn from them.

I do name my tarantulas but only the ones I have plans to keep. Not all of them. Have been doing it for ten years. I also keep a photo diary of them. For the ones I do name I prepare an elaborate enclosure and do so with them in mind. I tend to watch them as they grow up to see their patterns and design an enclosure in a way that I feel they can enjoy. Almost like giving them a furnished house with the decorations that they would like. Never generic or common. All enclosures are unique.

It is a hobby as well since I like to "collect" different species dependant on their traits, colors, size, and temperment.
It is almost an addiction because I keep looking for more.:p

I must be a communal spider, if i were to relate. I stick close to my best friends and family and pretty much everyone else I don't particularly care for. :} :}

I've loved spiders and all insects since before I can remember, back when I lived in florida I used to catch banana spiders with my mom (and thats when I was a little one (3 or 4). However, I decided to get a tarantula when I was in the third grade and a friend brought one in. That didn't happen. My dad is an acrachnaphobe. Every couple of years I asked again, and no no no, finally after 11 years, I got my first. That one has now gone to 9 (and my dad is NOT happy about it {D {D ) The only ones that have names are the ones that are sexed. (and one unsexed named for its crazyness "Spazz") The others will earn names as they grow up and I learn their gender. :)

I don't nessicarily know why its called a hobby, for me its a passion, an addiction, and an obsession. (and no, doctor, I do not want help. :D ):D

I would definately say it's my new hobby, though I do think about tarantulas all of the time and look at them several times a day. I would say the knowledge I've learned in the past year has been amazing on these creatures and I have a lot of respect for them. My 12yr old daughter is DYING for me to bring them to her new school and my 5yr old son has gotten over his fear of most bugs because of them :) .......so an obsessive hobby meaning I'm making time to attend to my babies LOL

I'm generally passionate about my hobbies.
Fishkeeping, T's...whatever.

I don't get the "is it a passion or a hobby?" thing.

I too am an outcast loner who prefers spiders to people( not even a close race!) when I first found this site it seemed to be full of many similar people who arent social butterflies....personnally i have aspergers and can relate to ANYTHING better than people..... its kind of a hobby but more of a passion/OCD thing!

I'm new to the invert scene, so I consider it more of a "hobby" than a "passion." I haven't gotten to the life-consuming stage -- but who knows? Maybe in ten years I'll have 30,000 posts and 750 tarantulas (it seems to grow on you).

Someone needs to start up Arachnids Anonymous!

I think you will find it will be a hell of a lot sooner than ten years.....wait and see.
I give you 2 or 3 months before you are hooked and eyeing up your room to see where the next T tank will go and the next one after that.
